A method for generating edge continuity data, comprising:receiving a color source signal and for each pixel: identifying the pixel as an edge pixel or no edge pixel based on a maximum luminance value and a minimum luminance value of a first neighborhood of the pixel;and determining a polarity value of the edge pixel based on a dot product involving the maximum luminance value and associated chroma values, denoted Max, and the minimum luminance value and associated chroma values, denoted Min, characterized by the dot product being X, Y , where the vector X is the average of Min and Max minus the blurred incoming color signal (Blr) and the vector Y is half the difference between Min and Max, reclassifying the polarity value of the edge pixel according to the following rules: if the center pixel is classified as a negative edge pixel and at least one surrounding pixel does not have the same classification, and the surrounding pixels are classified as either positive or no edge pixels, then the center pixel is reclassified as no edge pixel;if the center pixel is classified as a positive edge pixel and at least one surrounding pixel does not have the same classification, and the surrounding pixels are classified as either no edge or negative edge pixels, then the center pixel is reclassified as no edge pixel;if the center pixel is classified as a no edge pixel, and at least one surrounding pixel does not have the same classification, and the surrounding pixels are classified as positive edge or negative edge pixels, then the center pixel is classified as either negative or positive edge pixel;wherein the center pixel is the center pixel of a window defining a neighbourhood centered around the received pixel.
