12 claims: 4 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
Apparatus (22) for use with a steerable catheter (20; 40) that includes a thumb control (46) adapted to control a deflection of a distal tip (34; 42) of the catheter (20; 40) and a position sensor (30), fixed in a vicinity of the distal tip (34; 42), and adapted to generate a position signal, wherein the position signal is indicative of six dimensions of location and orientation information, the apparatus (22) comprising a robot (38), comprising:an end-effector (50;52), adapted to be coupled to the thumb control (46) when, in use, the apparatus (22) is coupled to such a catheter (20;40);and a controller (48), adapted in use to receive the position signal, and, responsive thereto, to drive the end-effector (50;52) to position the distal tip (34;42) of the catheter (20;40) at a desired position by manipulating the thumb control (46).
  2. 4
The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein:the catheter (20;40) includes a handle (44), adapted to advance and withdraw the catheter, the robot (38) comprises a handle end-effector (50), adapted to be coupled to the handle (44), and the controller (48) is adapted to drive the handle end-effector (50) to perform, by manipulating the handle, at least one of advancing the catheter and withdrawing the catheter.
  3. 5
The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 4, comprising a computer pointing device, adapted to receive an indication of a desired position of the distal tip (34;42).
  4. 6
A robotic guided catheter system (10) comprising:a steerable catheter (20;40), comprising a thumb control (46), which is adapted to control a deflection of a distal tip (34;42) of the catheter, and a position sensor (30), fixed in a vicinity of the distal tip (34;42), and adapted to generate a position signal, wherein the position signal is indicative of six dimensions of location and orientation information;and the apparatus (22) as defined in any one of claims 1 to 5.
  5. 7
Apparatus (22) for use with a steerable catheter (20; 40) that includes controls (44; 46) adapted to control a deflection of a distal tip (34; 42) of the catheter, which controls are generally optimized for manipulation by a human hand, and a position sensor (30), fixed in a vicinity of the distal tip (34; 42), and adapted to generate a position signal, wherein the position signal is indicative of six dimensions of location and orientation information, the apparatus (22) comprising a robot (38), comprising:at least one end-effector (50;52), adapted to be coupled to at least a portion of the controls (44;46) when, in use, the apparatus (22) is coupled to such a catheter (20;40);and a controller (48), adapted, in use, to receive the position signal, and, responsive thereto, to drive the at least one end-effector (50;52) to position the distal tip (34;42) of the catheter (20;40) at a desired position by inducing motion of the portion of the controls (46) that generally mimics motion of the portion of the controls induced when a human hand manipulates the controls.
  6. 10
The apparatus according to any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the controls (44;46) are adapted to advance and withdraw the catheter (20;40), the robot (38) comprises a longitudinal motion end-effector (50;52), adapted to be coupled to the controls, and the controller (48) is adapted to drive the longitudinal motion end-effector (50;52) to perform, by inducing motion of the controls that generally mimics motion of the controls induced when a human hand manipulates the controls, at least one of advancing the catheter and withdrawing the catheter.
  7. 11
The apparatus according to any one of claims 7 to 11, comprising a computer pointing device, adapted to receive an indication of the desired position of the distal tip (34;42).
  8. 12
A robotic guided catheter system (10) comprising:a steerable catheter (20;40), comprising controls (44;46) adapted to control a deflection of a distal tip (34;42) of the catheter, which controls are generally optimized for manipulation by a human hand, and a position sensor (30), fixed in a vicinity of the distal tip (34;42), and adapted to generate a position signal, wherein the position signal is indicative of six dimensions of location and orientation information;and the apparatus (22) as defined in any one of claims 7 to 10.
