  1. 1
A method of generating computer executable code using components, each component embodying a respective data manipulation service to be implemented by a component server as a component instance to provide manipulated data, the method being performed using a plurality of processing systems including a first processing system and one or more component processing systems coupled to the first processing system via a communications network, the method including:a) Determining a component combination, the component combination defining a sequence of data manipulations and being defined using a processing system in accordance with requirements to allow a desired functionality to be achieved;b) Implementing the component combination to generate the computer executable code by: i) Causing a component server corresponding to each component in the combination to start, each component server being a software application executed by a respective component processing system;ii) Causing each component server to perform the respective data manipulation service in accordance with the defined sequence of data manipulations, wherein: (1) At least some of the component servers perform the respective data manipulation service by: (a) Receiving data in accordance with the sequence of data manipulations;and, (b) Manipulating the data by modifying the data or creating data to provide manipulated data including code fragments;(2) At least some of the component servers perform the respective data manipulation service by at least one of: (a) Interacting with one or more other component servers;and, (b) Causing further component servers to start;and, (3) Each component server provides the manipulated data to one of the first processing system and another component server, in accordance with the sequence of data manipulations;and, iii) The first processing system receiving the code fragments as a result of the component servers performing the sequence of data manipulations, the code fragments being concatenated in accordance with the component combination to form the executable computer code;and c) Providing the computer executable code to a processing system, such that execution of the computer executable code by the processing system causes the processing system to perform the desired functionality.
  2. 6
A method according to any one of the claims 1 to 5, at least some of the components being formed from a number of combined sub-components, the sub-components also being components.
  3. 7
A method according to any one of the claims 1 to 6, at least some of the component servers being configured to perform the respective data manipulation service using at least one of:a) Manual manipulation of the received data by an individual;b) Automatic manipulation of the received data;and, c) Causing further combinations of sub-components be implemented, the sub-components also being components.
  4. 8
A method according to any one of the claims 1 to 7, the method including causing the first processing system to:a) Select a number of components in response to input commands received from a user;b) Define the component combination using the selected components;and, c) Cause the component combination to be implemented such that the defined series of data manipulations is performed.
  5. 10
A method according to any one of the claims 1 to 9, the method including causing a second processing system to:a) Determine details of a number of components;and, b) Provide at least an indication of the details to the user via the first processing system.
  6. 13
A method according to any one of the claims 8 to 12, the method including causing the first processing system to:a) Generate a graphical representation of the one or more selected components;and, b) Manipulate the graphical representation in response to input commands received from a user to thereby define the component combination.
  7. 14
A method according to any one of the claims 8 to 13, the method including:a) Generating a service request for each component in the component combination;and, b) Transferring the service request to each component processing system via the communications network, each component processing system being adapted to respond to the service request by causing a corresponding component server to start for performing the data manipulation service embodied by the respective component.
  8. 22
A method according to any one of the claims 19 to 21, the method including generating revenue by charging a cost for the use of each component.
  9. 24
A method according to any one of the claims 1 to 23, the method including causing the generated computer executable code to be context dependent.
  10. 28
A method according to any one of the claims 1 to 27, the method including:a) Providing details of a number of components to users;and, b) Allowing users to define the component combination.
  11. 29
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 28, wherein the method further includes, implementing at least some component servers by:a) Determining a context from the defined component combination;and, b) Performing the data manipulation service in accordance with the determined context.
  12. 30
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 29, wherein at least some of the components represent a number of predetermined techniques for performing the respective data manipulation service, and wherein the method includes implementing at least some of the component servers by:a) Selecting one of the predetermined techniques based on the component combination;and, b) Performing the respective data manipulation service using with the selected predetermined technique.
  13. 31
Apparatus for generating computer executable code using components, each component embodying a respective data manipulation service to be implemented by a component server as a component instance, each data manipulation service providing manipulated data by modifying, removing, moving or creating data, the apparatus including a plurality of processing systems including a first processing system and one or more component processing systems coupled to the first processing system via a communications network, the plurality of processing systems being adapted to:a) Determine a component combination, the component combination defining a sequence of data manipulations and being defined in accordance with the requirements to allow a desired functionality to be achieved;and, b) Implement the component combination to generate the computer executable code by: i) Causing a component server corresponding to each component in the combination to start, each component server being a software application executed by a respective component processing system;ii) Causing each component server to perform the respective data manipulation service in accordance with the defined sequence of data manipulations, wherein: (1) At least some of the component servers perform the respective data manipulation service by: (a) Receiving data in accordance with the sequence of data manipulations;and, (b) Manipulating the data to provide manipulated data including code fragments;(2) At least some of the component servers perform the respective data manipulation service by at least one of: (a) Interacting with one or more other component servers;and, (b) Causing further component servers to start;and, (3) Each component server provides the manipulated data to one of the first processing system and another component server, in accordance with the sequence of data manipulations;and, iii) The first processing system receiving the code fragments as a result of the component servers performing the sequence of data manipulations, the code fragments being concatenated in accordance with the component combination to form the computer executable code;and, c) Provide the computer executable code to a processing system, such that execution of the computer executable code by the processing system causes the processing system to perform the desired functionality.
