  1. 1
An apparatus for shaping at least one glass sheet comprising:a shaping station (26, 226, 326) comprising: an upper mold (98) comprising a full surface press face having a shaping surface (100);a lifting frame (76) having a connector (94) including a collar (96) through which gas can be moved, and a moving device (90) for moving the lifting frame toward and away from the shaping surface of the upper mold;a lower mold (44) comprising: a supporting member (38) having a first surface and an opposite second surface;sidewalls (58) of a chamber (62) mounting the first surface of the supporting member, with first ends of the sidewalls providing an open end of the chamber facing away from the first surface of the supporting member and opposite second end of the sidewalls of the chamber facing the first surface of the supporting member, and a shaping rail (48) mounting the first ends of the sidewalls of the chamber, the shaping rail having an upper glass sheet supporting surface (50) that supports selected peripheral portions of the at least one sheet, the sheet supporting surface having a profile generally complimenting corresponding portions of the shaping surface of the upper mold;a lower wall (60) of the chamber, the lower wall having a gasket assembly (72), the gasket assembly and collar sized to contact and form a seal to move gas into the interior of the chamber, the sidewalls extending from the shaping rail to the lower wall forming the chamber, or mounted on the lifting frame, and an alignment system to align the support member (38) within shaping station (26) and properly position the lower mold (44) relative to the upper mold (98), and wherein the moving device (90) moves the lifting frame (76) into engagement with the second surface of the supporting member (38) of the lower mold (44) to either move the lower wall into engagement with the sidewalls (58) to form the chamber, or to move the collar (96) and gasket assembly (72) into engagement with one another, and to move the upper glass supporting surface of the shaping rail (48) into a predetermined spaced relationship to the shaping surface of the upper mold (98).
  2. 20
A method of shaping at least one heat softened glass sheet comprising:supporting the at least one heat softened glass sheet (G) about its periphery on a shaping rail (48) of a lower mold (44), the lower mold comprising a supporting member (38) having a first surface and an opposite second surface, sidewalls (58) of a chamber (62) mounting the first surface of the supporting member, with first ends of the sidewalls providing an open end of the chamber and opposite second end of the sidewalls of the chamber facing the first surface of the supporting member, and the shaping rail mounting the first ends of the sidewalls of the chamber, the sheet supporting surface having a profile generally corresponding to the desired elevational contours of the periphery of the at least one glass sheet, and a lower wall (60) of the chamber, aligning the at least one sheet supported on the shaping rails in spaced relation to a downward facing shaping surface (100) of a full surface press face of an upper mold (98), the shaping surface generally contoured to a desired curvature moving a lifting frame (76) toward the second surface of the supporting member (38) to either move the lower wall (60) into engagement with the sidewalls (58) to form the chamber or to move a collar of a connector of the lifting frame, connectable to a heated gas source supplying pressurized heated gas, into engagement with a gasket assembly of the lower wall of the lower mold, and to move the lower mold (44) toward the shaping surface of the upper mold to move the at least one sheet against the shaping surface of the upper mold;positioning the chamber below the at least one glass sheet, sealing the chamber, and pressurizing the chamber to bias at least central portions of the sheet against the shaping surface of the upper mold to shape the at least one glass sheet to the desired configuration.
