  1. 1
A method for performing a handover by a subscriber station (710), SS, in a broadband wireless communication system, the method comprising the steps of:receiving, by the SS, downlink signals (745, 747) from a serving base station (720), BS, and at least one neighbor BS (730);measuring, by the SS, an arrival time difference (770) between a downlink signal received from the serving BS and a downlink signal received from the at least one neighbor BS;transmitting (751), by the SS, a handover request message including the measured arrival time difference to the serving BS;receiving, by the SS, a fast ranging information element (761) from a particular neighbor BS, wherein an allocation of the fast ranging information element has been performed based on the arrival time difference after determining to perform a handover to the particular neighbor BS;and performing, by the SS, an initial ranging for handover to the particular neighbor BS based on the allocated fast ranging information element upon receiving the fast ranging information element, wherein the arrival time difference is a value used for compensating for a round trip delay, RTD, caused by signal transmission/reception between the particular neighbor BS and the SS.
  2. 10
A method for performing a handover by a subscriber station (710), SS, from a serving base station (720), BS, to a target BS (730) selected from a plurality of neighbor BSs in a broadband wireless communication system including the serving BS communicating with the SS, and the plurality of neighbor BSs neighboring the serving BS, the method comprising the steps of:measuring, by the SS, an arrival time difference (770) of a downlink signal received from the target BS relative to a downlink signal received from the serving BS;estimating, by the SS, a round trip delay, RTD, between the SS and the target BS using the measured arrival time difference;transmitting, by the SS, to the serving BS a handover request message (751) including the estimated RTD;receiving, by the SS, from the target BS a fast ranging information element (761), wherein an allocation of the fast ranging information element has been performed based on the estimated RTD;and performing, by the SS, an initial ranging for handover to the target BS upon receiving the fast ranging information element.
