7 claims: 5 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
A marker (108) for use in an EAS (electronic article surveillance) system (100), comprising:a first resonant circuit (202, 402, 502) comprising a first planarized coil (406, 506) having a pair of terminals and a capacitor (C1) connected to said pair of terminals to generate a first resonant signal in response to an interrogation signal (104), a second resonant circuit (204, 404, 504) comprising a second planarized coil (408, 508) and a second capacitor (D1), wherein the fields of the first (202,402,502) and second resonant circuits (204, 404, 504) are mutually coupled, characterized in that said first coil (406, 506) and said second coil (408, 508) are non-wireconnected separated circuits, and overlapping partially, wherein the amount of overlap of said first and second coil correspond to an amount of mutual coupling between fields generated by said first (406, 506) and second coils (408,508) with the value of k being less than 0.6, and wherein said capacity of said second circuit (202, 402, 502) is a non-linear capacitor operating as a voltage dependent capacitor.
  2. 4
A marker according to claims 1 - 3, characterized in that said non-linear capacitor (D1) comprises one of a zener diode, a varactor, a metal-oxide semiconductor capacitor.
  3. 5
A marker according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that said interrogation signal (104) operates at approximately 13,56 Megahertz.
  4. 6
A marker according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that said first resonant frequency comprises approximately 13,56 Megahertz and said second resonant frequency comprises approximately 6,78 Megahertz.
  5. 7
Use of a marker (108) according to one of the preceding claims 1 - 6 in an EAS system (100), said system (100), comprising a transmitter (102) to transmit an interrogation signal (104) operating at a first frequency;a security tag (106) having a frequency-dividing marker (108) comprising a pair of overlapping resonant circuits (402, 404, 502, 504), with a first resonant circuit (402, 502) to generate a first resonant signal in response to said interrogation signal (104), and a second resonant circuit (404, 504) to receive said first resonant signal and generate a second resonant signal having a second resonant frequency in response to said first resonant signal;and a detector (112) to detect said second resonant signal from said marker and generate a detection signal in accordance with said second resonant signal.
