10 claims: 1 independent, 9 dependent

  1. 1
A method for ignoring ground clutter in determining the presence of a missile seeker (16, 38, 92) that retro-reflects incident light, the method comprising the steps of:a) projecting ultrashort laser pulses (80) having a pulse width of the order of one nanosecond towards a search area to illuminate the retro-reflector of said seeker (16, 38, 92);b) detecting only returns from the search area having the same pulse width as the projected pulses (80) so as to detect retro-reflective returns (70, 94) from the seeker (16, 38, 92) and so as to reject pulse-stretched returns (72, 90), the detecting step including using a focal plane array having a direct-reading focal plane array (62) of photo detectors (64), each of the photo detectors (64) having a threshold circuit (110) coupled to the output thereof and set high enough to ignore low-level non-retro-reflected returns (72, 90) from the terrain illuminated by the laser;c) directly and simultaneously reading out each of the photo detectors (64) for direct event detection of retro-reflected energy characterized by pulse widths having the pulse width of the projected pulses (80), the readout being in a time period short enough to obtain a reading from each of the photo detectors (64) before the arrival of the next pulsed return, the time period defining a frame;and d) determining from the readout that there is a retro-reflected return from a missile seeker (16, 38, 92) and the position thereof if there is a signal from a single threshold circuit (110) during the frame, and if the signal from the single threshold circuit (110) is not longer than the pulse width of the projected ultrashort pulse (80) such that pulse width thresholding selects retro-reflected returns (70, 94) and ignores elongated returns (72, 90) from the illuminated terrain.
  2. 4
A detector element for performing the method according to any one of claims 1 to 3.
  3. 7
A detector element according to Claim 5, wherein said filter includes a NAND gate having one input thereto coupled to the output of said threshold circuit and a delay circuit coupled between the output of said threshold circuit and the other of the inputs to said NAND gate.
  4. 8
A detector element according to Claim 7, wherein said delay circuit delays the output of said threshold detector in the nanosecond range.
  5. 9
A focal plane array adapted to perform the method according to any one of claims 1 to 3, comprising an array of detector element according to any one of Claims 4 to 8;and a demultiplexing circuit for directly reading out said threshold circuits in a time frame less than the time between returns to said array, the demultiplexer reading out all of the photo detectors in said array virtually simultaneously.
  6. 10
A focal point plane array architecture for use with a pulsed laser generating pulses having a pulse width of the order of one nanosecond to detect only retro-reflected returns from a missile seeker, for performing the method according to any one of claims 1 to 3, comprising:a photon detector and a threshold circuit for each pixel of said array for increasing the feasibility of photon counting at infrared wavelengths;an ultra fast frame readout for said array utilizing direct simultaneous pixel readout;means coupled to said frame readout for inherent discrimination of retro-reflecting targets by ignoring ground returns, said inherent discrimination means including a filter for ignoring returns that persist beyond the pulse width of the pulses from said laser;and, means coupled to said means for inherent discrimination for programmable range gating.
