25 claims: 3 independent, 22 dependent

  1. 1
A method for detection and diagnosis of faults in a network comprising:detecting a discrepancy in operation of a network by: supplying data that describes the network to a network simulation (210) so that the network simulation provides an estimation of network performance (504);and determining whether the estimation of network performance differs from observed network performance of the network (508);and diagnosing a root cause of the discrepancy by injecting one or more of a plurality of faults into the network simulation until the estimation of network performance approximates the observed network performance (510, 512, 514, 516).
  2. 11
A system for detection and diagnosis of faults in a network comprising a plurality of nodes (102) that are communicatively coupled, one to another, to form said network, wherein:one or more said nodes include an agent module (112(N)) that is executable thereon to: collect network settings;and form a communication that includes the network setting for communication over the network;and at least one said node includes a manager module (116(N)) that is executable thereon to: receive the communication;generate a simulation of the network based on the network settings obtained from the communication so that the network simulation provides an estimation of network performance;and detect a fault (510, 512, 514, 516) in network operation by comparing an estimation of network performance with an observation of the network performance of the network (508).
  3. 22
A node (102) in a network having means for detection and diagnosis of faults in said network, said node comprising:means for managing operation (102(N)) of a network having a plurality of means for routing data packets, wherein: each said routing means is communicatively coupled to another said routing means;and the managing means further includes means for: providing network settings obtained from the network to a means for simulating the network (210);receiving an output from the simulating means which estimates network performance of the network;and detecting a fault (510, 512, 514, 516) by comparing the output with an observation of network performance of the network (508).
