Method and device for managing irritating auditory phenomena

Abstract

A method and device for managing irritating auditory phenomena, such as tinnitus and hyperacusis. A managing signal is generated in which frequency components in the managing signal in a frequency range where a listener has reduced hearing are accentuated. Any unpleasant characteristic in the managing signal is ameliorated by including coherent signal components within a general listening range of the listener.

45 claims: 12 independent, 33 dependent

  1. 1
A method of managing an irritating auditory phenomenon comprising:generating a managing signal by accentuating frequency components in a signal in a frequency range where a listener has reduced hearing and ameliorating any unpleasant characteristic in the managing signal by including coherent signal components within a general listening range of the listener.
  2. 7
A computer readable recording medium on which is recorded a program for carrying out the method as defined in claim 1.
  3. 8
A carrier signal encoded to transmit, via a global computer network, a computer executable program for carrying out the method as defined in claim 1.
  4. 9
A method of reducing the effects of an irritating auditory phenomenon comprising:exposing a listener to a managing signal;and manipulating application of the managing signal to the listener so that the listener's perception of the irritating auditory phenomenon is modified on a neural level wherein the listener is gradually desensitized to the irritating auditory phenomenon over time, to thereby habituate the listener to the irritating auditory phenomenon.
  5. 26
A method for reducing the effects of an irritating auditory condition, comprising:measuring a listener's hearing loss characteristics;calculating an optimal gain for each hearing threshold at each frequency in each ear;and    applying the contour curve to a dynamic input signal to obtain an individualized substantially ideal output signal.
  6. 36
A method for managing the perception of tinnitus comprising:generating a managing signal by accentuating frequency components in a signal in a frequency range where a listener has deficient hearing and which managing signal includes a frequency substantially similar to the perceived tinnitus.
  7. 37
The method as defined in claim 36, further comprising ameliorating any unpleasant characteristic in the masking signal by including coherent signal components within a general listening range of the listener.
  8. 38
The method as defined in claim 37, wherein the managing signal is a music signal.
  9. 39
A computer readable recording medium on which is recorded a program for carrying out the method as defined in claim 37.
  10. 40
A carrier signal encoded to transmit, via a global computer network, a computer executable program for carrying out the method as defined in claim 37.
  11. 44
A device for managing an irritating auditory phenomenon by generating a managing signal, the device comprising a signal filter configured to accentuate frequency components in the managing signal in a frequency range where a listener has reduced hearing and any unpleasant characteristic in the managing signal is ameliorated by including coherent signal components within a general listening range of the listener.
  12. 45
A device for managing the perception of tinnitus by generating a managing signal, the device comprising a signal filter configured to accentuate frequency components in a signal in a frequency range where a listener has deficient hearing and which managing signal includes a frequency substantially similar to the perceived tinnitus.
