  1. 1
A cognitive function improving apparatus comprising:(i) means for applying electrical stimulation to at least a portion of a patient's subcortical structures involved in the control of generalised efference copy signals;(ii) mean for detecting generalised efference copy signals of the patient, comprising means for identifying regional or intrahemispherie changes in train waves;and, (iii) means for controlling the time on and time off of the applied electrical stimulation in response to detected generalised efference copy signals of the patient.
  2. 2
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 1 wherein the means for controlling the applied electrical stimulation in response to detected generalised efference copy signals of the patient is capable of controlling at least one of the parameters of intensity, frequency and pulse width of the applied electrical stimulation.
  3. 4
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 3 wherein the pulse generator is capable of generating voltage wave trains selected from sine, square, spike, rectangular, triangular or ramp.
  4. 6
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 5 wherein the electrode is capable of applying electrical stimulation at a frequency of from I Hz to 1 kHz.
  5. 7
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 6 wherein the electrode is capable of applying electrical stimulation at a frequency of from 10 Hz to 500 Hz.
  6. 8
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 7 wherein the electrode is capable of applying electrical stimulation at a frequency of from 50 Hz to 250 Hz.
  7. 10
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 9 which is capable of applying electrical stimulation to two or more subdivisions of a patient's intralaminar nuclei which modulate separate cortical regions in a 5 synchronized manner.
  8. 11
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 5 wherein the electrode is an implantable multipolar electrode comprising an implantable pulse generator that is a radiofrequency controlled device operatable by an 15 external transmitter.
  9. 12
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 11 wherein the implantable multipolar electrode is a Medtronic 3387 electrode.
  10. 14
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 13 wherein the electrode has microcannulae suitable for delivering pharmacological agents to a patient's subcortical structures.
  11. 15
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 13 or 14 further comprising a pharmacological agent.
  12. 16
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 15 wherein the pharmacological agent is an excitatory or inhibitory transmitter that is capable 10 of influencing intralaminar nuclei function.
  13. 17
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 14 wherein the pharmacological agent is selected from acetylcholine, noradrenaline, seratonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid or analogues thereof.
  14. 18
A cognitive function improving apparatus according to Claim 15 wherein the pharmacological agent is an amino acid transmitter that is capable of influencing intralaminar nuclei function.
