Method and system for admission control in communication networks

Abstract

A system for admission control in a wireless local area network (WLAN) adapted to serve a set of stations (PC, STB, LT) and manage real time transmission as well as and TCP/IP sessions includes an access point (AP) configured for: when either a new station (PC, STB, LT) joins the network or a new TCP/IP session is being initiated, checking if sufficient bandwidth is available in the network for the new traffic flow associated with the new station (PC, STB, LT) or TCP/IP session without interfering with any ongoing real time transmission in the network, andin case no sufficient bandwidth is found to be available, whereby said new traffic flow could interfere with said ongoing real time transmission, blocking such new traffic flow.

31 claims: 12 independent, 19 dependent

  1. 1
A method for admission control in a network adapted to serve a set of stations (PC, STB, LT) and manage real time transmission as well as TCP/IP sessions , characterized in that it includes the steps of:- when either a new station (PC, STB, LT) joins the network or a new TCP/IP session is being initiated, checking if sufficient bandwidth is available in the network for the new traffic flow associated with said new station (PC, STB, LT) or TCP/IP session without interfering with any ongoing real time transmission in the network, and- in case no sufficient bandwidth is found to be available, whereby said new traffic flow could interfere with said ongoing real time transmission, blocking said new traffic flow.
  2. 7
The method of either of claims 1 or 6, characterized in that it includes the steps of:- once recognized real time traffic in the network, calculating the bit rate thereof, and- determining said remaining available bandwidth as a function of the wireless channel conditions for the stations (PC, STB, LT) in said set.
  3. 8
The method of any of claims 1, 6 or 7, characterized in that it includes the step of determining said remaining available bandwidth in the network as a function of:- the real time flow bitrate- the relative positions of an access point (AP) to the network and the other stations (PC, STB) in said set- the presence of other interfering equipment in the same ISM band.
  4. 13
The method of any of the previous claims, characterized in that it includes the step of selecting said network as a wireless local area network (WLAN)
  5. 14
A system for admission control in a network adapted to serve a set of stations (PC, STB, LT) and manage real time transmission as well as TCP/IP sessions, characterized in that it includes an access point (AP) configured for:- when either a new station (PC, STB, LT) joins the network or a new TCP/IP session is being initiated, checking if sufficient bandwidth is available in the network for the new traffic flow associated with said new station (PC, STB, LT) or TCP/IP session without interfering with any ongoing real time transmission in the network, and- in case no sufficient bandwidth is found to be available, whereby said new traffic flow could interfere with said ongoing real time transmission, blocking said new traffic flow.
  6. 20
The system of either of claims 14 or 19, characterized in that said access point (AP) is configured for:- recognizing real time traffic in the network,- calculating the bit rate thereof, and- determining said remaining available bandwidth as a function of the wireless channel conditions for the stations (PC, STB, LT) in said set.
  7. 21
The system of any of claims 14, 19 or 20, characterized in that said access point (AP) is configured for determining said remaining available bandwidth in the network as a function of:- i) the real time flow bitrate- ii) the relative positions of said access point (AP) and the other stations (PC, STB) in said set- iii) the presence of other interfering equipment in the same ISM band.
  8. 26
The system of any of claims 14 to 25, characterized in that said access point (AP) is associated with any of the stations in said set (PC, STB, LT).
  9. 27
The system of any of claims 14 to 25, characterized in that said access point (AP) is associated with apparatus selected from the group consisting of a personal computer (PC), a set top box (STB), a TV set, and a laptop computer.
  10. 28
The system of any of claims 14 to 27, characterized in that said access point (AP) includes a dedicated packet classifier (22) configured for performing packet classification by comparing header fields against a look-up-table (22a).
  11. 29
A communication network including the system of any of claims 14 to 28.
  12. 31
A computer program product loadable in the memory of a digital computer, comprising software code portions for performing the steps of the method of any of claims 1 to 13 when said product is run on a computer.
