Multi- tiered virtual local area network (vlan) domain mapping mechanism

Abstract

In one embodiment, a first port of a device provides connectivity to a customer network and a second port of the device provides connectivity to a provider network. Frame mapping logic associated with the first port processes a network message received at the first port and accesses a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) mapping data structure that maps customer VLAN designations used in the customer network to provider VLAN designations used in the provider network. Frame mapping logic uses the VLAN mapping data structure to associate the received network message with a particular provider VLAN designation based upon the received network message's particular customer VLAN designation. The received network message is then passed toward the second port.

  1. 1
An intermediate network device (226) for mapping network messages received from a customer domain to a provider domain of a computer network, the network device comprising:a plurality of ports (302) configured to send and receive network messages, at least some of the messages being associated with a first Virtual Local Area Network, VLAN, designation used in the customer domain;frame mapping logic (350) configured to process network messages received at the ports;and an Ingress VLAN mapping data structure (400) accessible by the frame mapping logic (350) and configured to map a plurality of first VLAN designations used in the customer domain to corresponding second VLAN designations used in the provider domain, wherein the frame mapping logic (350) is configured to access the Ingress VLAN mapping data structure (400) and to associate a received network message with a second VLAN designation based upon the message's first VLAN designation and the port (302) on which the message was received.
  2. 14
A method performed by an intermediate network device having a plurality of ports (302) for sending and receiving network messages, the method for mapping network messages received from a customer domain to a provider domain, the method comprising the steps of:receiving a network message at a given port (302) from the customer domain, the network message associated with a first Virtual Local Area Network, VLAN, designation used in the customer domain;identifying a second VLAN designation used in the provider domain based on the message's first VLAN designation and the given port (302) on which the message was received;and associating the network message with the second VLAN designation.
