    A copolymer produced by a transition metal-mediated atom or group transfer radical polymerization comprising:at least one polymeric branch with a predominantly alternating monomer structure, comprising: at least one monomer unit derived from a radically (co)polymerizable monomer having electron-donor properties;and at least one monomer unit derived from a radically (co)polymerizable monomer having electron-acceptor properties;at least one of an average degree of polymerization of at least 3 and a number average molecular weight of at least 250 g/mol;and a molecular weight distribution less than or equal to 1.5.

    A periodic copolymer produced by a transition metal-mediated atom or group transfer radical polymerization comprising:at least one polymeric segment with a predominantly periodic monomer structure, comprising: at least one first monomer unit derived from a radically (co)polymerizable monomer;and at least one second monomer unit derived from a radically polymerizable monomer, wherein the first and second monomer unit are distributed in a substantially regular sequence along the polymeric segment;at least one an average degree of polymerization of at least 3 and a number average molecular weight of at least 250 g/mol;and a molecular weight distribution less than or equal to 1.5.

    A copolymer produced by a transition metal-mediated atom or group transfer radical polymerization comprising:a water soluble backbone comprising monomer units derived from radically polymerizable monomers;at least two hydrophobic polymeric branches grafted to the backbone;and a molecular weight distribution less than or equal to 1.5.

    A block or graft copolymer comprising:at least one first polymer segment;and at least one second polymer segment, wherein the first polymer segment and the second polymer segments were prepared from different polymerization processes such that the tacticity of the first polymer segment is different than the tacticity of the second polymer segment, and wherein one of the first polymer segment or the second polymer segment exhibits a molecular weight distribution less than or equal to 1.5.

    A gradient copolymer produced by a transition metal-mediated atom or group transfer radical polymerization comprising:at least one polymeric segment with a predominantly gradient monomer structure, comprising: at least one first monomer unit derived from a radically (co)polymerizable monomer;and at least one second monomer unit derived from a radically polymerizable monomer, wherein the concentration of the second monomer units changes along the polymeric segment;at least one of an average degree of polymerization of at least 3 or a number average molecular weight of at least 250 g/mol;and a molecular weight distribution less than or equal to 1.5.

    The copolymer of claims 1, 7, 17, or 21, further comprising:a terminal functional group selected from a radically transferable atom or group, a halogen, Cl, Br, 1, OR 10 , SR 14 , SeR 14 , OC(=O)R 14 , OP(=O)R 14 , OP(=O)(OR 14 ) 2 , O-(R 14 ) 2 , S-C(=S)N(R 14 ) 2 , CN, NC, SCN, CNS, OCN, CNO, N 3 , OH, O, C 1 -C 6 -alkoxy, (SO 4 ), PO 4 , HPO 4 , H 2 PO 4 , triflate, hexafluorophosphate, methanesulfonate, arylsulfonate, carboxylic acid halide, R 15 CO 2 , H, NH 2 , COOH, or CONH 2 , where R 14 is aryl or a straight or branched C 1 -C 20 alkyl group or where an N(R 14 ) 2 group is present, the two R 14 groups may be joined to form a 5-, 6- or 7-member heterocyclic ring, R 15 is H or a straight or branched C 1 -C 6 alkyl group, aryl or aryl substituted 1 to 5 times with a halogen, and R 10 is an alkyl of from 1 to 20 carbon atoms or an alkyl of from 1 to 20 carbon atoms in which each of the hydrogen atoms may be replaced by a halide, alkenyl of from 2 to 20 carbon atoms, alkynyl of from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, phenyl, phenyl substituted with from 1 to 5 halogen atoms or alkyl groups with from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, aralkyl, aryl, aryl substituted alkyl, in which the aryl group is phenyl or substituted phenyl and the alkyl group is from 1 to 6 carbon atoms.

    The copolymer of claims 1, 7, 17, 21 or 22, further comprising:a residue of initiator, wherein the initiator is of the formula:         R 11 R 12 R 13 C-X;R 11 C(=O)-X;R 11 R 12 R 13 Si-X;R 11 R 12 N-X;R 11 N-X 2 ;(R 11 ) n P(O) m -X 3-n ;or         (R 11 )(R 12 O)P(O) m -X where: X is radically transferable atom or group;R 11 , R 12 and R 13 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H, halogen, C 1 -C 20 alkyl, C 3 -C 8 cycloalkyl, R 8 3Si, C(=Y)R 5 , C(=Y)NR 6 R 7 , COCl, OH, CN, C 2 -C 20 alkenyl or alkynyl, oxiranyl, glycidyl, C 2 -C 6 alkylene or alkenylene substituted with oxiranyl or glycidyl, aryl, heterocyclyl, aralkyl, aralkenyl, aryl-substituted alkenyl, and alkenyl is vinyl which may be substituted with one or two C 1 -C 6 alkyl groups and/or halogen atoms, C 1 -C 6 alkyl in which from 1 to all of the hydrogen atoms are replaced with halogen and C 1 -C 6 alkyl substituted with from 1 to 3 substituents selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, aryl, heterocyclyl, C(=Y)R 5 , C(=Y)NR 6 R 7 , oxiranyl and glycidyl, with the provisio that no more than 2 of R 11 , R 12 and R 13 are H;R 5 is alkyl of from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, alkylthio of from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, OR 24 (where R 24 is H or an alkali metal), alkoxy of from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, aryloxy or heterocyclyloxy;R 6 and R 7 are independently H or alkyl of from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or R 6 and R 7 may be joined together to form an alkylene group of from 2 to 7 carbon atoms, thus forming a 3- to 8-membered ring, and R 8 is H, straight or branched C 1 -C 20 alkyl or aryl;m is 0 or 1;and n is 0, 1 or 2.
