  1. 1
An interbody spinal fusion implant for insertion across a disc space between two adjacent vertebral bodies of a spine, said implant comprising:an upper member (102;302;802;1102;1102";1402) adapted for placement toward and at least in part within one of the adjacent vertebral bodies, said upper member (102;302;802;1102;1102";1402) having at least one opening (110) adapted to communicate with one of the adjacent vertebral bodies, said upper member (102;302;802;1102;1102";1402) having a trailing end and a leading end;a lower member (106;306;806;1106;1106";1406) adapted for placement toward and at least in part within the other of the adjacent vertebral bodies, said lower member (106;306;806;1106;1106";1406) having at least one opening (112) adapted to communicate with the other of the adjacent vertebral bodies, said openings of said upper and lower members being in communication with one another and adapted for permitting for the growth of bone from adjacent vertebral body to adjacent vertebral body through said implant (100;300;800;1000;1100;1100";1300;1400) and being sufficiently sized and located to allow for interbody spinal fusion through said implant (100;300;800;1000;1100;1100";1300;1400), said lower member (106;306;806;1106;1106";1406) having a trailing end and a leading end corresponding to said trailing end and said leading end of said upper member (102;302;802;1102;1102";1402), respectively, and a length between said trailing and leading ends, said upper and lower members articulating therebetween adjacent said leading ends of said upper and lower members and allowing for expansion of the height of said implant (100;300;800;1000;1100;1100";1300;1400), said upper and lower members having a first position relative to one another allowing for a collapsed implant height and a second position relative to one another allowing for an increased height;at least a portion of a bone-engaging projection formed on the exterior of each of said opposed arcuate portions of said upper and lower members for engaging the adjacent vertebral bodies and to facilitate securing said implant (100;300;800;1000;1100;1100";1300;1400) into the spine;a blocker (121) pivotally attached to one of said upper and lower members and being adapted to pivot into cooperative engagement with another of said one of said upper and lower members, said blocker being adapted to hold at least a portion of said upper and lower members apart so as to maintain the increased height of said implant (100;300;800;1000;1100;1100";1300;1400) and resist the collapse of said implant (100;300;800;1000;1100;1100";1300;1400) to the collapsed implant height when said implant (100;300;800;1000;1100;1100";1300;1400) is in a final deployed position: and a tool-engaging portion adapted to engage a tool to facilitate insertion of said implant (100: 300: 800: 1000: 1100: 1100": 1300:1400) into the spine, said tool-engaging portion being provided proximate a trailing end of said implant, characterized in that said upper member (102;302;802;1102;1102";1402) and said lower member (106;306;806;1106;1106";1406) each have a portion being at least in part arcuate adapted for placement toward and at least in part within one of the adjacent vertebral bodies, said at least a portion of said bone-engaging projection being formed on the exterior of each of said opposed arcuate portions of said upper and lower members, said blocker (121) being pivotally attached to one of said upper and lower members proximate said trailing ends of said upper and lower members so as to maintain the increased height of said implant (100;300;800;1000;1100;1100";1300;1400).
  2. 6
The implant of any one of claims 1-4, wherein said arcuate portions of said upper and lower members in the first position are angled to one another over a substantial portion of the length of said implant and form at least a portion of a frusto-conical shape along the length of said implant.
  3. 7
The implant of any one of claims 1-4, wherein said blocker moves said arcuate portions of said upper and lower members from a parallel orientation to an angled orientation relative to one another.
