Foot controller for microsurgical system

Abstract

A foot control for use in a microsurgical system comprises a console, and a foot pedal for the user of the system which can be used either by the left or right foot during surgery. The foot pedal is disposed for movement in pitch by the user to selectively control at least a first linear function carried out by the system according to its operating modes and mode sequences and is disposed for movement in yaw by the user to selectively control at least a further linear function carried out by the system according to its operating modes and mode sequences. The foot control further has a plurality of foot-operated switch actuators for permitting user selection of modes and mode sequences by the system and a control circuit connected with the microsurgical system in a computer network for data communication with the microsurgical system. The control circuit electronically supervises foot pedal movements in both pitch or yaw and actuation of the foot-operated switch actuators and reports such movements and actuation to the microsurgical system for control accordingly of the microsurgical system in its operating modes. The control circuit communicates with the system for programming the foot pedal switch actuators and permits user control of operating modes and mode sequences of the system.

  1. 1
A foot control for use in a microsurgical system having a central processor for defining operating modes and mode sequences for the system, a foot control comprising:a console;a foot pedal presented by the console for use by the user of the system such that it can be used either by the left foot or right foot during surgery;means disposing the foot pedal for movement in pitch by the user to selectively control at least a first linear function carried out by the system according to its operating modes and mode sequences;means disposing the foot pedal for movement in yaw by the user to selectively control at least a further linear function carried out by the system according to its operating modes and mode sequences;a plurality of foot-operated switch actuators upon the console for permitting user selection of modes and mode sequences by the system;a control circuit within the console and connected with the microsurgical system in a computer network for data communication with the microsurgical system;the control circuit electronically supervising foot pedal movements in both pitch or yaw and supervising actuation of the foot-operated switch actuators and for reporting such movements and actuation to the microsurgical system for control accordingly of the microsurgical system in its operating modes;andthe control circuit communicating with the system for programming the features and functions of the foot pedal and foot-operated switch actuators and for permitting user control of operating modes and mode sequences of the system.
  2. 16
A foot control for use in a microsurgical system having a central processor for defining operating modes and mode sequences for the system, a foot control comprising:a console;a shaft assembly carried by the console and disposing the foot pedal for movement in pitch by the user during one or more operating modes;the shaft assembly also disposing the foot pedal for movement in yaw by the user during one or more operating modes;a plurality of foot-operated switch actuators upon the console for permitting user selection of modes and mode sequences by the system;a control circuit within the console and connected with the microsurgical system in a computer network for data communication with the microsurgical system;a pitch encoder interconnected with the circuit and driven by the shaft assembly and responsive to foot pedal movements in pitch;a yaw encoder interconnected with the circuit and driven by the shaft assembly and responsive to foot pedal movements in yaw;the shaft assembly being rotatable within the console in response to pitch movement of the foot pedal, and includes a gear drive arrangement interconnected with the pitch encoder for electronically signalling the extent of foot pedal pitch;andthe control circuit reporting the extent of foot pedal pitch and yaw to the microsurgical system.
