  1. 1
A method comprising:receiving (210;410, 412) a signal (108) at a radio in a timeslot on a carrier using a plurality of antenna elements, the signal including: an access control burst from a first remote radio, wherein the access control burst comprises a random access burst having a unique training sequence identifying a spatial channel number of a random access channel, the unique training sequence to indicate that the random access burst is on the random access channel, the random access burst being a request to establish the logical connection between the radio and the first remote radio;and a traffic burst from a second remote radio, the traffic burst being part of an existing logical connection between the radio and the second remote radio, wherein the traffic burst includes a second training sequence to indicate that the traffic burst is on a spatial channel dedicated for traffic bursts of an ongoing traffic stream;based on the unique training sequence, determining a weight vector for the first radio;with the determined weight vector, extracting (212;414) the access control burst from the received signal using spatial processing;based on the second training sequence, extracting the traffic burst (214;416) from the received signal using spatial processing;and transmitting (418) an access assignment burst from the radio to the first remote radio in response to the received random access burst, wherein the access assignment burst comprises a grant of the requested establishment of the logical connection between the radio and the first remote radio.
  2. 4
A communications device comprising:an array of antenna elements to receive signals;a receiver (5) coupled to the array of antenna elements (3) to receive a signal in a timeslot on a carrier from the plurality of antenna elements, the signal including: an access control burst from a first remote radio, wherein the access control burst comprises a random access burst having a unique training sequence identifying a spatial channel number of a random access channel, the unique training sequence to indicate that the random access burst is on the random access channel, the random access burst being a request to establish the logical connection between the radio and the first remote radio;and a traffic burst from a second remote radio, the traffic burst being part of an existing logical connection between the communications device and the second remote radio, wherein the traffic burst includes a second training sequence to indicate that the traffic burst is on a spatial channel dedicated for traffic bursts of an ongoing traffic stream;and a processor (17) coupled to the receiver to determine, based on the unique training sequence, a weight vector for the first remote radio, the processor further to extract, with the determined weight vector, the access control burst from the received signal using spatial processing, the processor further to extract, based on the second training sequence, the traffic burst from the received signal using spatial processing.
