  1. 1
A method of communicating audio or video representative data between a mobile unit (22) and an associated access point (16) in a wireless data communication system with mobile units (18) associating with access points (16) for data communication therewith, and wherein said data communication system operates according to a protocol wherein said mobile units are arranged to conserve power by signaling an associated access point that the mobile unit is entering power save mode, and wherein said associated access point buffers data packets (74) for mobile units in power save mode until receiving a polling signal (70) from a corresponding mobile unit, the method characterized by :signaling said associated access point (16) that said mobile unit (22) is entering a power save mode;after signaling, powering down a transmitter and receiver (36) of said mobile unit (22) for a selected period of time within a time period T, the selected period of time corresponds to a duration of at least an audio or video signal forming an audio or video signal data packet (74);accumulating of audio or video signal data in said mobile unit (52) during the selected period of time to form at least audio or video representative transmit data packets (78);buffering audio or video representative receive data packets (74) destined for said mobile unit at said access point;and powering up said mobile unit transmitter and receiver (36) for communication with said associated access point (16) for a communication session after the selected period of time, said communications session occurring during transmit/receive operation periods (64, 66, 68) at intervals corresponding to said time period (T), and including communicating said accumulated transmit data packets (78) and said buffered receive data packets (74) between said mobile unit (22) and said associated access point (16).
  2. 11
A mobile unit (22) for communications in a wireless data communications network wherein audio or video representative data is transmitted between an access point (16) and an associated mobile unit(18) in data packets, and wherein said mobile unit operates according to a protocol to conserve power by signaling the associated access point that the mobile unit is entering power save mode, and wherein said associated access point buffers data packets (74) for mobile units in power save mode until receiving a polling signal (70) from a corresponding mobile unit, characterized by :a receiver (36) for receiving radio signals including audio or video data packets (74) from said access point;a transmitter (36) for transmitting radio signals including audio or video data packets to said access point;a processor (32) for processing said audio or video data packets and for providing output audio or video data;and a digital to analog converter (30) and an audio or video output circuit (28) for providing output audio or video corresponding to said audio or video data packets;wherein said processor (32) is programmed to control operation of said transmitter and receiver (36) and to periodically: signal the associated access point (16) that the mobile unit (22) is entering a power save mode and power down the transmitter and receiver (36) for a selected period of time within a time period T, the selected period of time-corresponds to a duration of at least an audio or video signal forming an audio or video signal data packet (74), accumulate audio or video signal data during the selected period of time to form at least audio or video representative transmit data packets (78) while the associated access point buffers audio or video representative receive data packets (74) destined for said mobile unit at the access point;and to power up the transmitter and receiver (36) for communication with the associated access point (16) for a communication session after the selected period of time, said communication session occurring during transmit/receive operation periods (64, 66, 68) at intervals corresponding to said time period (T) and include exchanging the accumulated transmit data packets (78) and the buffered receive data packets (74) between the mobile unit (22) and the associated access point (16).
