Artificial intervertebral disc having a captured ball and socket joint

Abstract

An artificial disc having a pair of opposing baseplates, for seating against opposing vertebral bone surfaces, separated by a ball and socket joint that includes a ball compression locked to a post extending from one of the baseplates. The ball is captured within a curvate socket formed in a peak of a convex structure attached to the other of the baseplates. The socket is formed by opposing curvate surfaces, one on the convex structure and one on the other of the baseplates. While the ball angulates freely in the socket, the rotation of the ball in the socket has a limited range due to interference between a protrusion on the convex structure that extends into the socket and a curvate recess on the ball. The ball and socket joint therefore permits the baseplates to rotate relative to one another through a limited range and also angulate relative to one another.

  1. 1
An intervertebral spacer device comprising:a first plate (1400) having a first outer face (1402), a first inner face (1408) and a post (1412) extending from said first inner face, said first inner face (1408) having a concave contour surrounding said post (1412);a second plate (1800) having a second outer face and a second inner face, said second inner face having a curvate pocket (1812) disposed thereon;a ball (1900) disposed within said curvate pocket (1812) and being movable relative to said second plate (1800), said ball (1900) having a bore (1902) extending at least partially therethrough;said post (1412) of said first plate (1400) being disposed within said bore (1902) of said ball (1900) for coupling said first plate (1400) with said ball (1900), wherein said first and second plates (1400, 1200) are angulatable and rotatable relative to one another;characterized in that it also comprises :a housing (2000) having a first surface, a second surface and an aperture extending therebetween, said housing (2000) being securable to said second plate (1200), said aperture of said housing (2000) being at least partially defined by a curvate wall (2016) extending between said first surface and said second surface, wherein said curvate wall (2016) is positioned adjacent to said ball so as to capture said ball (1900) within said curvate pocket (1812);and wherein said ball (1900) includes a protrusion (1904) or a recess defined by a second wall and said housing includes the other of said protrusion and said recess (1818), said protrusion (1408) extending into said recess (1818), wherein contact between said protrusion or said recess (1818) and said second wall limits rotation and/or angulation of said ball (1900) within said curvate pocket (1812).
  2. 13
A method of assembling an intervertebral spacer device, the method comprising:providing a first plate having a first outer face, a first inner face and a post extending from said first inner face;providing a second plate having a second outer face and a second inner face, said second inner face having an opening for a curvate pocket, characterized in that said second plate includes a recess disposed thereon;providing a housing having a first wall extending therefrom;capturing a ball in said curvate pocket by compression fitting said first wall of said housing into said recess of said second plate such that said housing at least partially overlies said ball, said ball having a bore extending at least partially therethrough, wherein said captured ball is movable relative to said second plate;and compression fitting said post of said first plate into said bore of said ball for coupling said first and second plates, wherein said first plate is articulatable and rotatable relative to said second plate.
