  1. 1
A digital equipment system (500) comprising:a host (502) for sending write commands to write files having sector information;and a controller device (506) responsive to said commands for writing and updating sector information, and including, a nonvolatile memory system (508) organized into blocks, each block including a plurality of sector locations for storing sector information;and means to designate a particular free block for storing a particular type of sector that is accessed or updated more frequently than others, hereinafter referred to as a frequently accessed sector;wherein upon updating of the frequently accessed sector, the updated sector information is written to a next free sector of the particular block thereby avoiding moving the sectors of the particular block to another block;characterised by comprising an access counter (521) adapted to store in the overhead portion of a sector information in the nonvolatile memory an access counter value (21) which maintains track of the number of times the sector is accessed, and means to detect said frequently accessed sector based on the access counter value.
  2. 12
A method of operating a digital equipment system (500) including nonvolatile memory storage locations comprising:organizing the nonvolatile memory storage locations into blocks, each block including a plurality of sector locations for storing sector information;designating a particular free block having a plurality of sector locations for storing a particular type of sector that is accessed or updated more frequently than others, hereafter referred to as a frequently accessed sector;writing frequently accessed sector information to one of the sector locations of the plurality of sector locations of the particular block;receiving updated frequently accessed sector information;and updating the frequently accessed sector information by writing the updated frequently accessed sector information into a next free sector location of the particular block thereby avoiding moving the sectors of the particular block to another block;characterised by operating an access counter (521) adapted to store in the overhead portion of a sector information in the nonvolatile memory an access counter value (21) which maintains track of the number of times the sector is accessed and detecting said frequently accessed sector based on the access counter value.
