  1. 1
A balloon catheter (1, 131) comprising an outer tube (2, 118), a balloon (8, 120), a tip (9, 119) and an inner tube (4, 123), a proximal portion (21, 130) of said inner tube disposed within the outer tube and a distal portion (7, 132) of said inner tube extending beyond a distal end (10) of the outer tube, the tip, a distal end of the inner tube, and a distal end (8a) of the balloon membrane are connected, the proximal portion of the inner tube having an inner diameter in the range of 0.51 mm (0.020 inches) to about 0.89 mm (0.035 inches) and a wall thickness in the range of 0.0125 mm (0.0005 inches) to about 0.20 mm (0.008 inches) and wherein the distal portion of the inner tube having an inner diameter the same as that of the proximal portion of the inner tube and a wall thickness of at least 0.025 mm (0.001 inches) greater than that of the proximal portion of the inner tube, characterised in that the balloon catheter further comprises a one-way valve (24) connected to the proximal portion (21, 130) of the inner tube.
  2. 3
The balloon catheter as claimed in claims 1 or 2 wherein said one-way valve (24) is connected to a proximal end of the proximal portion (21, 130) of the inner tube.
  3. 4
The balloon catheter as claimed in claims 1 or 2 wherein the tip (9, 119) includes a one-way valve (23).
  4. 5
The balloon catheter as claimed in claims 1 or 2 wherein the proximal portion (21, 130) of the inner tube collapses upon application of a vacuum of a predetermined magnitude to a lumen (5, 102) defined by the inner tube (4, 123), the distal portion (7, 132) of the inner tube not collapsing when exposed to the vacuum.
  5. 6
The balloon catheter as claimed in claims 1 or 2 wherein said one-way valve (24) is connected to a proximal end of the proximal portion (21, 130) of the inner tube and wherein the proximal portion of the inner tube collapses upon application of a vacuum of a predetermined magnitude to a lumen (5, 102) defined by the inner tube (4, 123), the distal portion (7, 132) of the inner tube not collapsing when exposed to the vacuum.
  6. 7
The balloon catheter as claimed in claims 1 or 2 wherein said one-way valve (24) is connected to a proximal end of the proximal portion (21, 130) of the inner tube and wherein tip includes a one-way valve (23) and the proximal portion of the inner tube collapses upon application of a vacuum of a predetermined magnitude to a lumen (5, 102) defined by the inner tube (4, 123) , the distal portion (7, 132) of the inner tube not collapsing when exposed to the vacuum.
