    A vacuum bandage system (10) for use with a wound (12) having a wound surface (15, 17), the vacuum bandage system comprising:a wound dressing member (52) made of a generally non-porous material and having a wound-facing surface (54), the wound dressing member (52) having a plurality of holes (64) and a port (58) in communication with the holes (64) via one or more passageways (62) formed in the wound dressing member (52) between the port (58) and the holes (64) and configured to be coupled to a vacuum source (12), and a cover (13) configured for placement over the wound dressing member (52) for attachment to healthy skin surrounding the wound in order to seal about the wound and create a sealed environment between the wound and the cover in which a negative pressure can be established, characterised in that the vacuum bandage system (10) comprises a wound insert (26, 126, 226, 326, 426, 526, 626, 726, 826, 926) configured for placement within the wound (12) between the wound surface (15, 17) and the wound dressing member (52), the insert being made of a material which is not porous or foamlike.

    The vacuum bandage system of anyone of claims 3 to 8 having a suction tube (60) coupled to a vacuum. source (20), the port of the wound dressing member (52) receiving the suction tube, the insert (26, 126, 226, 326, 426, 526, 626, 726, 826, 926) being spaced from the suction tube.

    The vacuum bandage system of any preceding claim, wherein the insert is cylindrical in shape.

    The vacuum bandage system of any preceding claim, wherein the insert is generally rod-shaped.

    The vacuum bandage system of either claim 10 o claim 11, wherein the insert has a diameter of approximately 2.85 mm (0.0925 inch).

    The vacuum bandage system of anyone of claims 1 to 9, wherein the wound insert comprises a plurality of rods (926) that are made of a generally non-porous, flexible material and that are held together by webs (928) that are tearable to permit the rods to be separated from each other.

    The vacuum bandage system of any preceding claim, wherein the wound insert is made of a generally non-adhesive material.

    The vacuum bandage system of any preceding claim, wherein the wound insert is made of medical grade silicone.

    The vacuum bandage system of any preceding claim, wherein the insert is made of approximately 50 durometer silicone.
