10 claims: 1 independent, 9 dependent

  1. 1
An anvil assembly (30) for a surgical stapling device comprising:an anvil head (124) having a post (122), an anvil (129) including a plurality of staple forming pockets (140);a cutting ring (128) positioned about the post (122);an anvil center rod (154) extending from the post of the anvil head;characterised by comprising: a retainer clip (127) positioned on the post of the anvil head, the retainer clip having at least one resilient arm (127a, 127b) which in its unbiased condition extends outwardly of the post;and further characterised in that said cutting ring (128) is slidably positioned about the post from a first position to a second position, wherein in its first position, the cutting ring is at least partially engaged with the resilient arm to urge the resilient arm out of a path of travel of the cutting ring and in its second position, the resilient arm of the retainer projects into the path of travel of the cutting ring to prevent movement of the cutting ring form its second position back to its first position to prevent the cutting ring (128) from sticking to a knife blade during unapproximation of the stapling device.
  2. 9
An anvil assembly according to any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the cutting ring is formed from polyethylene.
  3. 10
A surgical stapling device (10) comprising:a handle assembly (12) including a firing trigger (20);a body portion (14) extending distally from the handle assembly;a head portion (16) including an anvil assembly (30) according to any one of claims 1 to 9 and a shell assembly (31) including a cutting knife (188), wherein the shell assembly supports an annular array of staples, the anvil assembly being movable in relation to the shell assembly between spaced and approximated positions, the device arranged such that firing the firing trigger when the anvil assembly is in the approximated position causes the annular array of staples to be driven from the shell assembly and to be deformed by the anvil head and concurrently the cutting knife to engage and cut into cutting ring and move the cutting ring into its second position.
