An interconnect for dissipating electrostatic charges on a head slider

Abstract

An interconnect that may reduce a head slider's exposure to electrostatic discharge events and may dissipate charging of the head is provided. Conductive (56) and nonconductive adhesives are used to adhere a head slider to the interconnect. An electromagnetic interference generating circuit (60) generates current that flows through the conductive adhesive bonding (56) the head slider to the flexure arm (22). The electromagnetic interference current breaks down the resistance of the conductive adhesive (56) to dissipate an electrostatic voltage charge on the head slider. This may prolong the life of the head slider and a read/write head coupled to the head slider.

  1. 1
An interconnect for a flexure (22) of a hard disk drive (10) comprising:a flexure (22) coupled to an actuator arm (24) pivotally mounted to a base plate (16) via a bearing assembly (26);a head slider (21) adhered to the flexure (22);anda circuit (60) coupled to the head slider (21) and formed on the flexure (22), the circuit generating current sufficient to dissipate electrostatic voltage on the head slider (21).
  2. 6
The interconnect of any on of the previous claims, wherein the circuit (60) is coupled to the head (20), head slider (21), and to the flexure (22), the circuit (60) generates current sufficient to breakdown the impedance of the conductive adhesive to allow current to flow through the adhesive.
  3. 7
The interconnect of any one of the previous claims wherein the circuit (60) generates current that flows through the head (20) and head slider (21) to dissipate electrostatic voltage on the head (20) and head slider (21).
  4. 8
The interconnect of any one of the previous claims wherein the circuit (60) includes a switch (91) for controlling the flow of current through the head (20) and head slider (21).
  5. 10
A method for dissipating electrostatic voltage on a head slider (21), the method comprising the following steps:(a) providing a flexure (22) coupled to an actuator arm (24) pivotally mounted to a base plate (16) via a bearing assembly (26);(b) providing a head slider (21) adhered to the flexure (22), the head slider (21) adhered to the flexure (22) via a conductive adhesive;(c) generating a current sufficient to breakdown the impedance of the conductive adhesive;and(d) applying current to the head slider (21) to dissipate electrostatic voltage on the head slider (21).
