  1. 1
A transparency (20, 120, 520) having a heatable wiper rest area comprising:a rigid transparent (22, 24, 124, 522, 524) sheet having major surface (28, 30, 34, 38, 134, 530, 534, 538);an opaque band (40, 540) positioned on the major surface of the sheet along at least a portion of a selected edge of the sheet at an expected wiper rest area;and a wiper rest area heating arrangement (42, 542, 642) comprising: an electrically conductive member (48, 148, 548, 648);and a plurality of bus bars (46, 46A, 46B, 46C, 546, 646A-E) positioned in electrical contact along the electrically conductive member (48, 148, 548, 648), characterized in that the electrically conductive member (48, 148, 548, 648) is positioned on the opaque band (40,540) on the sheet extending along at least a portion of the selected edge of the sheet at the expected wiper rest area;the plurality of bus bars (46, 46A-C, 546, 646A-E) divides the electrically conductive member (48, 148, 548, 648) into a plurality of adjacent discrete heatable areas (50A, 50B, 650A-D);a first lead (56, 556, 656) to electrically interconnect selected ones of the bus bars, the first lead extending on the band (40, 540) along an edge of the electrically conductive member;a second lead (61, 661) to electrically interconnect other selected ones of the bus bars, the second lead extending on the band (40, 540) along the edge of the electrically conductive member, such that moving current through the first and second leads (56, 61, 556, 656, 661) and bus bars (46, 46A-C, 546, 646A-E) moves current across the discrete areas (50A, 50B, 650A-D) to heat the discrete areas, wherein a portion of the first lead and a portion of the second lead overlay each other;and an insulating member positioned between the portion of the first lead (56, 556, 656) and the portion of the second lead (61, 661) to electrically insulate the first lead from the second lead.
  2. 19
A method of making a transparency (20, 120, 520) having a heatable wiper rest area comprising:providing a rigid transparent sheet (22, 24, 124, 522, 524) having major surface (28, 30, 34, 38, 134, 530, 534, 538);applying an opaque band (40, 540) positioned on the major surface of the sheet along at least a portion of a selected edge of the sheet at an expected wiper rest area;applying an electrically conductive member (48, 148, 548, 648) and positioning a plurality of bus bars (46, 46A-C, 546, 646A-E) in electrical contact along the conductive member (48, 148, 548, 648) characterized in that the electrically conductive member (48, 148, 548, 648) is positioned on the opaque band (40, 540) along at least a portion of the selected edge of the sheet at the expected wiper rest area;the plurality of bus bars (46, 46A-C, 546, 646A-E) divides the electrically conductive member (48, 148, 548, 648) into a plurality of adjacent discrete heatable areas (50A, 50B, 650A-D);a first lead (56, 556, 656) is positioned on the band and along an edge of the coating to electrically interconnect selected ones of the bus bars;a second lead (61, 661) is positioned along the band and along the edge of the coating to electrically interconnect other selected ones of the bus bars, such that moving current through the first and second leads (56, 61, 556, 656, 661) and bus bars (46, 46A-C, 546, 646A-E) moves current across the discrete areas (56, 556, 656) to heat the discrete areas, wherein a portion of the first lead (56, 556, 656) and a portion of the second lead (61, 661) overlay each other;and the portion of the first lead (56, 556, 656) is electrically insulated from the portion of the second lead (61, 661).
