  1. 1
A system for reducing multi-cell interference in wireless communications, wherein a first base station (10) whose communication signals with its covered terminals (20, 30) are interfered by communication signals transmitted between at least one interfering base station (40) and its covered terminals (50), the system comprising:means for configuring at least one first inactive time slot (102, 112) in a transmit frame (100,110) associated with the first base station during which communications between the first base station and its covered terminals are detectably reduced while communications between the interfering base station and its covered terminals are maintained at predetermined levels;means for configuring at least one second inactive time slot (122, 132) in a transmit frame (120,130) associated with the interfering base station during which communications between the interfering base station and its covered terminals are detectably reduced while communications between the first base station and its covered terminals are maintained at predetermined levels;wherein the first inactive time slot associated with the first base station is configured so as not to overlap with the second inactive time slot associated with the interfering base station;and further comprising: means for detecting characteristics of interfering signals generated by the communications between the at least one interfering base station and its terminals during the first inactive time slot.
  2. 21
A method for reducing multi-cell interference in a wireless communication system, the wireless communication system having a first base station (10) whose communication signals with its covered terminals (20, 30) are interfered by communication signals transmitted between at least one interfering base station (40) and its covered terminals (50), the method comprising:configuring, by the first base station, at least one first inactive time slot (102, 112) in a transmit frame (100,110) during which communications with its covered terminals are detectably reduced while communications between the at least one interfering base station and its covered terminals are maintained as normal;configuring at least one second inactive time slot (122, 132) in a transmit frame (120,130) associated with the interfering base station during which communications between the interfering base station and its covered terminals are detectably reduced while communications between the first base station and its covered terminals are maintained as normal;wherein the first inactive time slot associated with the first base station is configured so as not to overlap with the second inactive time slot associated with the interfering base station;the method further comprising: detecting characteristics of interfering signals generated by the communications between the at least one interfering base station and its terminals during the first inactive time slot.
