13 claims: 8 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
An actuator (9, 13) comprising a tubular portion extending in a longitudinal direction, the tubular portion comprising a body of an elastomeric material (2) arranged between two electrodes (3), wherein any line of symmetry extending between two opposite points on a periphery in a cross-section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction has a length which is different from any other such line of symmetry, wherein the tubular portion is formed by rolling up a sheet comprising at least two elements (1, 7, 20, 21) each comprising a body of an elastomeric material (2) and an electrode (3) attached to a first surface thereof, wherein deformation of the body is restricted in a first direction and supported in another, second, direction, wherein the at least two elements (1, 7, 20, 21) include - an element of a first type (1, 20) comprising a conductive terminal (5, 22) of a first type being in electrical contact with the electrode (3) of the element (1, 20), - an element of a second type (7, 21) comprising a conductive terminal (6, 23) of a second type being in electrical contact with the electrode (3) of the element (7, 21), and wherein the conductive terminal (5, 22) of the first type is electrically isolated from the conductive terminal (6, 23) of the second type when the elements are stacked.
  2. 3
An actuator (9, 13) according to claims 1-2, wherein the first direction is perpendicular to the second direction.
  3. 4
An actuator (9, 13) according to any of claims 1-3, wherein the body and the electrode (3) comprise corrugations extending in the first direction.
  4. 5
An actuator (9, 13) according to any of claims 1-4, wherein - the element of the first type (1, 20) further comprises a conductive terminal (6, 23) of a second type being electrically isolated from the electrode (3) of the element (1, 20), and wherein - the element (7, 21) of the second type further comprises a conductive terminal (5, 22) of a first type being electrically isolated from the electrode (3) of the element (7, 21), wherein the conductive terminals of the first type (5, 22) are in mutual electrical contact and the conductive terminals of the second type (6, 23) are in mutual electrical contact when the elements are stacked.
  5. 7
An actuator (9, 13) according to claims 5-6, wherein elements of the first type (1, 20) are arranged alternately with elements of the second type (7, 21).
  6. 8
An actuator (9, 13) according to any of claims 1-7, wherein the tubular portion is formed by rolling of the sheet around a core of an elastomeric material.
  7. 9
An actuator (9, 13) according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the tubular portion is filled with a core of an elastomeric material.
  8. 11
An actuator (9, 13) according to claims 9-10, wherein the core is made by filling a cavity (15) limited by the tubular portion and two closure parts (14) with a liquid elastomer material which is subsequently hardened while the tubular portion is stretched axially.
