Method and apparatus for disposing of liquid surgical waste for protection of healthcare workers

Abstract

An improved method for measuring and automatically disposing of infectious waste generated during and after surgical and clinical procedures is provided. The infectious waste removal device includes a suction source, a method for pressure verification, separation chamber for isolating fluids, containment reservoir, measurement chamber for determining fluid received, an information source for such fluid volumes, a quantitative method for calculating fluid dynamics, a post use cleaning method, and other attributes for use by the surgical team or healthcare staff in order to minimize health care worker handling of said infectious waste and to limit their possible exposure.

7 claims: 3 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
An apparatus for handling waste fluid, comprising:a) a negative pressure source;b) a separation chamber (9) in fluid communication (9A) with said negative pressure source, said separation chamber (9) having an inlet (1) through which waste fluid from a waste fluid source is drawn into said separation chamber by said negative pressure source;c) a holding chamber (10) in fluid communication with said separation chamber (9);d) an outlet in fluid communication with said holding chamber (10);e) a pump (P) disposed to pump said waste fluid from said holding chamber (10) through said outlet, while said negative pressure is maintained in said separation chamber (9);f) a first sensor (HS) electrically coupled to said pump and disposed to detect when said waste fluid reaches a predetermined high level in said holding chamber (10), whereupon said pump (P) is activated to begin pumping said waste fluid from said holding chamber (10) through said outlet;g) a second sensor (LS) electrically coupled to said pump (P) and disposed to detect when said waste fluid reaches a predetermined low level in said holding chamber (10), whereupon said pump (P) is de-activated;h) a microprocessor (50) electrically coupled to said first sensor (HS) and said second sensor (LS), said microprocessor (50) programmed to determine and record a volume of waste fluid pumped through said outlet by said pump (P).
  2. 6
A method for disposing of waste fluid, said method comprising the steps of:a) drawing waste fluid from a waste fluid source into a separation chamber (9) under a negative pressure;b) providing a holding chamber (10) in fluid communication with said separation chamber for separating liquid waste from said waste fluid, said holding chamber (10) having a fluid outlet;c) detecting when said liquid waste reaches a predetermined high liquid level within said holding chamber (10);d) pumping said liquid waste from said holding chamber (10) through said fluid outlet until said liquid waste reaches a predetermined low liquid level, while maintaining said negative pressure in said separation chamber (9);e) measuring the volume of liquid pumped through said fluid outlet;f) displaying said volume of liquid pumped through said fluid outlet on a visual display.
  3. 7
The method of claims 6 further including disposing of said liquid waste pumped through said outlet directly into a sewer.
