  1. 1
A mailpiece tracking system (100) comprising:a mailing information database (120) arranged to receive and store mailing data (112) concerning a mailing delivered to a postal authority (104) by a mailer (102), the mailing including first and second mail pieces;an observation events database (118) arranged to receive and store observation event data (114) from sorting equipment (108) of said postal authority (104);a historical information database (122) for storing historical information based on said event data and providing a basis for predicting a sequence of expected observation events for the first and second mail pieces: a processing unit (116) comprising means for receiving said mailing data and said observation event data;means (210) for determining whether or not a first observation event of said sequence of expected observation events has occurred for a first mailpiece of said mailing and whether or not a second observation event of said sequence of expected observation events has occurred for a second mailpiece of said mailing;said determining means being operatively coupled to the observation events database (118), to the mailing information database (120) and to the historical information database (122);and means (210) for providing an alarm indication (124) based on non-occurrence of said first observation event and occurrence of said second observation event.
  2. 2
The mail piece tracking system according to Claim 1, further comprising:a processor (200) programmed to constitute said determining means (210).
  3. 3
A mail piece tracking system, according to Claim 2, further comprising:a storage device (210) operatively coupled to the processor (200) and storing a program to control the processor to: determine whether said first observation event has occurred for said first mail piece;determine whether said second observation event has occurred for said second mail piece;and provide said alarm indication with respect to the first mail piece based on non-occurrence of the first observation event and on occurrence of the second observation event.
  4. 4
A method of tracking a mailpiece comprising:receiving mailing data (112) concerning a mailing delivered to a postal authority (104) by a mailer (102), the mailing including first and second mail pieces;storing said mailing data in a mailing information database (120);receiving (306) observation event data from sorting equipment (108) of said postal authority (104);storing said observation event data in an observation event database (118);receiving from a historical information database (122) historical information based on said event data and providing a basis for predicting a sequence of expected observation events for the first and second mail pieces;processing (706) said mailing data (112) and said observation event data (114) to determine whether or not a first observation event of said sequence of expected observation events has occurred for a first mailpiece of said mailing and to determine whether or not a second observation event of said sequence of expected observation events has occurred for a second mailpiece of said mailing;and providing (714) an alarm indication based on non-occurrence of said first observation event and occurrence of said second observation event.
  5. 5
The method according to Claim 4, further comprising:prior to the processing step, simultaneously delivering the first and second mail pieces to a postal authority.
  6. 6
The method according to Claim 4 or 5, wherein the first mail piece exhibits a first postal code to direct delivery via a first postal authority and the second mail piece exhibits a second postal code to direct delivery via the first postal authority.
  7. 7
The method according to Claim 6, wherein the first and second postal codes are identical to each other.
  8. 8
The method according to Claim 6 or 7, wherein each of the first and second postal codes is indicated as a POSTNET barcode (606).
  9. 9
The method according to Claim 8, wherein each of the first and second mail pieces exhibits a respective PLANET barcode (608).
  10. 10
The method according to any one of Claims 4 to 9, wherein the first mail piece includes a credit or debit card and the second mail piece does not include a credit or debit card.
  11. 11
An article of manufacture comprising:a computer usable medium having computer readable program code means embodied therein for tracking a first mail piece, the computer readable program code means in said article of manufacture comprising: computer readable program code for causing a computer to perform the following operations: receiving mailing data (112) concerning a mailing delivered to a postal authority (104) by a mailer (102), the mailing including first and second mail pieces;storing said mailing data in a mailing information database (120);receiving (306) observation event data from sorting equipment (108) of said postal authority (104);storing said observation event data in an observation event database (118);receiving from a historical information database (122) historical information based on said event data and providing a basis for predicting a sequence of expected observation events for the first and second mail pieces;processing (706) said mailing data (112) and said observation event data (114) to determine whether or not a first observation event of said sequence of expected observation events has occurred for a first mailpiece of said mailing and to determine whether or not a second observation event of said sequence of expected observation events has occurred for a second mailpiece of said mailing;and providing (714) an alarm Indication based on non-occurrence of said first observation event and occurrence of said second observation event.
