A light concentrator, comprising:at least one core (10), which core has a first surface and a second surface that are substantially parallel to each other;a cladding (12) having a lower index of refraction than the core and in contact with the first and second surfaces of the core;a plurality of nanostructures (9) located in the core, which nanostructures absorb light impinging on a surface of the concentrator and emit light;and, at least one collector (11) which collects the waveguided light, the collector being operably connected to the core;characterised in that the nanostructures (9) comprise nanowires or branched nanowires, which nanostructures are oriented substantially nonrandomly within the core (10), with a vector average of the nanostructures' orientations having a nonzero component perpendicular to the first and second surfaces of the core, whereby the fraction of the light emitted by the nanostructures that is waveguided by the at least one core is greater than ½*(cos(arcsin(n 1 /n 2 ))-cos(pi-arcsin(n 1 /n 2 ))), where n 1 is the refractive index of the cladding and n 2 is the refractive index of the core.
