    A cassette (10) for docking with a docking station in an electrophoresis apparatus, the cassette comprising:a housing having an upper portion (12) and a lower portion (14);a substrate support (24) in the housing between the upper and lower portions (12, 14), the substrate support (24) adapted to receive an electrophoresis substrate (22);at least two electrodes (20) located within the housing on opposite sides of the substrate support (24);and at least one electrical contact located on an external surface of the housing and electrically connected to at least one of the electrodes (20) so as to permit current to pass between the electrical contact and the electrode;characterised by at least two liquid reservoirs (16) provided inside of the housing between the upper and lower portions (12, 14) for holding a liquid buffer and each capable of being in contact with a section of an electrophoresis substrate (22);each liquid reservoir (16) containing an electrode (20) and being formed in the housing on either side of the substrate support (24), and liquid ports (30) formed in the housing and extending to an external surface of the cassette (10), the ports being in fluid communication with the reservoirs (16) to connect each reservoir (16) to a buffer source and waste container to supply and remove liquids to and from the cassette (10).

    The cassette (10) according to any of the preceding claims, wherein there is at least one other port (32) adapted to channel gas into and/or out of the housing.

    The cassette (10) according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the upper portion (12) is spaced apart from the substrate support (24) so as to define a substrate reservoir (46) over the substrate support (24), and wherein there is an additional port (28) formed in the housing and extending to an outer surface of the housing which permits passage of fluid into and out of the substrate reservoir (46).

    The cassette (10) according to any of the preceding claims, wherein at least part of the upper portion (12) is movable with respect to the substrate support (24) when the upper portion (12) is engaged with the lower portion (14).

    The cassette (10) according to claim 6, wherein the part of the upper portion that is movable is a cover (12) that spans over at least a portion of the substrate support (24) to permit access to the substrate support (24);and wherein the cover is hingedly attached to the housing.

    The cassette (10) according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the liquid ports (30) and the electrical contact(s) (20) are located at the same surface of the housing.

    The cassette (10) according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the substrate support (24) is removably attached to the housing.

    A method for performing electrophoresis comprising the steps of:providing a cassette (10) for docking with a docking station in an electrophoresis apparatus comprising a housing having an upper portion (12) and a lower portion (14), a substrate support (24) located between the upper portion (12) and the lower portion (14), an electrophoresis substrate (22) disposed on the support and having opposed ends, liquid ports (30) extending into the cassette (10), at least two electrodes (20) located within the cassette (10) on opposite sides of the substrate support (24), at least one electrical contact located on an external surface of the housing and electrically connected to at least one of the electrodes (20) so as to permit current to pass between the electrical contact and the electrode (20), and two liquid reservoirs (16) provided inside of the housing between the upper and lower portions (12, 14) for holding a liquid buffer and each capable of being in contact with a section of the electrophoresis substrate (22);each liquid reservoir (16) containing one of the at least two electrodes (20) and being formed in the housing on either side of the substrate support (24), wherein each end of the electrophoresis substrate (22) extends into one of the liquid reservoirs (16);providing an electrophoretic apparatus having a docking station (512) for receiving a cassette (10), a liquid buffer source (504), a waste container and a power source (508), wherein the ports (30) are in fluid communication with the reservoirs (16) and connect each reservoir to the buffer source (504) and to the waste container;docking the cassette (10) in the docking station (512) of the apparatus such that the liquid buffer source (504) and the waste container are in fluid communication with the ports (30), and that the power source (508) is in electrical communication with at least two of the electrodes (20) through the at least one electrical contact;placing a sample to be tested onto the substrate (22);supplying buffer from the buffer source (504) in the apparatus to the ports (30);saturating the substrate (22) with the buffer;supplying power from the apparatus to at least two of the electrodes (20) to produce separation;removing power from the electrodes (20);channelling the used buffer from the cassette (10) to the waste container in the apparatus;and analyzing the substrate separation.

    A method according to claims 9 or 10, wherein the apparatus includes an identification system, the method comprising the steps of:using the identification system to receive information from an identifying device associated with the substrate (22) or the cassette (10);and controlling the electrophoresis analysis based on the information received.

    A method according to any of claims 9 to 12, wherein the step of saturating the substrate (22) involves channelling buffer into the reservoirs (16) and into the substrate (22).

    A method according to any of claims 9 to 13, wherein the apparatus includes multiple docking stations (512), each adapted to receive a cassette (10), and wherein the method further comprises the steps of docking additional cassettes (10), each in a separate docking station (512) and with its own substrate (22) and specific sample, and producing electrophoretic separation of the sample in each substrate (22).

    An electrophoresis apparatus comprising:a docking station (512) for receiving a cassette (10) comprising a housing having an upper portion (12) and a lower portion (14) and at least one electrical contact located on an external surface of the housing;at least one electrical contact located at the docking station (512), the electrical contact being electrically connectable to a power source (508) for supplying current to the contact;characterised by at least one buffer source (504);a waste storage container;a liquid manifold (100) including at least one dispenser located at the docking station (512) and operable for liquid communication with liquid ports (30) of a cassette (10) received in the docking station (512), a plurality of conduits for conveying liquid from the buffer source (504) to the liquid ports (30) and for conveying waste from the liquid ports (30) of the docking station (512) to the waste storage container, and at least one valve for controlling flow through the dispenser;and a controller (510) for controlling operation of the valves.

    An electrophoresis apparatus according to claims 15 or 16, wherein there are a plurality of electrical contacts located at the docking station (512);wherein the electrical connection is an electrical manifold (502) which includes two electrical terminals for connection to the power supply (508), and a switch connected to the terminals and the electrical contacts for switching the electrical connection between the contacts;and wherein the controller (510) controls the switching of the switch.

    An electrophoresis apparatus according to any of claims 15 to 17, wherein there are a plurality of dispensers;and wherein the controller (502) selectively controls the opening and closing of valves to control flow of liquid from the different dispensers.

    An electrophoresis apparatus according to any of claims 15 to 18, further comprising an identification system positioned so as to read indicia associated with a cassette (10) or a substrate (22), the identification system adapted to supply signals to the controller (502) based on the indicia.

    An electrophoresis apparatus according to any of claims 15 to 20, wherein the apparatus includes multiple docking stations (512), each docking station adapted to receive a cassette (10), and wherein the controller (512) controls electrophoretic separation of a sample in each cassette (10).
