  1. 1
A receiver (216, 217, 340) in a digital data transmission system (210), said system including a transmitter (213, 310), said receiver comprising at least one demodulator (344) coupled to a receiving unit and configured to demodulate at least one of a first and a second transmit signal;characterized in that the receiving unit includes satellite signal detection means (342, 343) for detecting the first transmit signal transmitted from a first communication satellite (212, 214) and the second transmit signal transmitted from a second communication satellite (212, 214), the first transmit signal produced when the transmitter modulates a primary data stream (302) with a secondary data stream (304) on a first carrier wave associated with the first communication satellite and the second transmit signal produced when the transmitter modulates the primary and secondary data streams on a second carrier wave associated with the second communication satellite, wherein the modulated secondary data stream is phase offset (610) relative to the modulated primary data stream, and wherein said receiver unit is operable to receive the first and the second transmit signals;and in that said receiving unit further includes a terrestrial signal detection means (342, 343) for detecting a third transmit signal transmitted from a terrestrial repeater (218, 219, 350), the third transmit signal produced when the terrestrial repeater receives at least one of the first and the second transmit signals and modulates the primary data stream with the secondary data stream on a third carrier wave associated with the terrestrial repeater.
  2. 22
A method of receiving transmitted data, the method comprising the steps of:detecting a first transmit signal, the first transmit signal transmitted from a first communication satellite (212, 214) and comprising a primary data stream (302) and a secondary data stream (304) modulated on a first carrier wave associated with the first communication satellite;detecting a second transmit signal, the second transmit signal transmitted from a second communication satellite (212, 214) and comprising the primary data stream and the secondary data stream modulated on a second carrier wave associated with the second communication satellite;and characterized by the steps of: detecting a third transmit signal, the third transmit signal transmitted from a terrestrial repeater (218, 219, 350) and comprising the primary data stream and the secondary data stream re-encoded on a third carrier wave associated with the terrestrial repeater;demodulating the first and second transmit signals, wherein the primary data stream comprises one of QPSK, D-QPSK and pi/4 D-QPSK modulated data and includes a first number of information bits per symbol;the secondary data stream comprises BPSK modulated data in the form of a phase offset (610) relative to the primary data stream and includes a second number of information bits that is lower than the first number of information bits;interpreting the first transmit signal;and providing the interpreted signal to an output unit.
  3. 28
A terrestrial repeater (218, 219, 350) in a digital data transmission system (210) including a transmitter (213, 310) for transmitting signals, said terrestrial repeater (218,219,350) comprising an encoder for re-encoding a primary and a secondary data stream on a third carrier wave to form a third transmit signal; and a re-transmitter for transmitting the third transmit signal to a receiver (216, 217, 340) and characterized by :a receiving unit (352, 353) for detecting a first transmit signal and a second transmit signal, the first transmit signal transmitted from a first communication satellite (212, 214) and produced when the transmitter modulates the primary (302) and the secondary data stream (304) on a first carrier wave associated with the first communication satellite, and the second transmit signal transmitted from a second communication satellite (212, 214) and produced when the transmitter modulates the primary and the secondary data stream on a second carrier wave associated with the second communication satellite, wherein said receiving unit is adapted to receive the first and the second transmit signals, the first and the second transmit signals including the secondary data stream, wherein the modulated secondary data stream is phase offset (610) relative to the modulated primary data stream.
