15 claims: 8 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
An endoscopic bipolar forceps (10) for sealing and dividing tissue, comprising:a housing (20) having an elongated shaft (12) attached thereto, the shaft defining a longitudinal axis;the elongated shaft having opposing jaw members (110, 120) at a distal end thereof, the jaw members being movable relative to one another from a first position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween, each jaw member including an electrically conductive sealing surface (112, 122);a drive rod assembly (32) for imparting movement of the jaw members between the first and second positions;a handle assembly (130) attached to the housing for actuating the drive rod assembly;a source of electrical energy connected to each jaw member such that the sealing surfaces of the jaw members are capable of conducting energy through tissue held therebetween to effect a seal;a knife assembly (200) attached to the housing for separating tissue grasped between the jaw members;and characterised by the handle assembly including a four-bar mechanical linkage (40, 65, 36, 50, 37, 67b) which includes a handle (40) and a cam-like piston (36) which cooperate to impart a uniform closure pressure against tissue grasped between the jaw members, whereby movement of the cam-like piston imparts movement to the drive rod assembly to impart movement of the jaw members between the first and second positions;and at least one non-conductive stop member (150) disposed on an inner facing surface of at least one of the jaw members which defines a gap (G) distance between the sealing surfaces of the jaw members during sealing.
  2. 4
An endoscopic bipolar forceps for sealing and dividing tissue according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one non-conductive stop member creates a gap between the electrically conductive sealing surfaces within the range of about 0.001 inches (0.03 mm) to about 0.006 inches (0.1 mm).
  3. 6
An endoscopic bipolar forceps for sealing and dividing tissue according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one non-conductive stop member is a series of stop members.
  4. 7
An endoscopic bipolar forceps for sealing and dividing tissue according to any one of the preceding claims, the at least one stop member being stop members, the stop members disposed on each of the jaw members.
  5. 8
An endoscopic bipolar forceps for sealing and dividing tissue according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one stop member is made from an insulative material consisting of parylene, nylon or ceramic.
  6. 9
An endoscopic bipolar forceps for sealing and dividing tissue according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one stop member is injection molded, overmolded or stamped onto the jaw member.
  7. 10
An endoscopic bipolar forceps for sealing and dividing tissue according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the at least one stop member is slide-on.
  8. 11
An endoscopic bipolar forceps according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the handle and the cam member of the four-bar mechanical linkage cooperate with a spring (22) to create the uniform closure pressure against tissue grasped between the jaw members.
  9. 12
An endoscopic bipolar forceps according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the handle assembly includes a fixed handle (50) and a movable handle (40).
