Multipole ion guide for mass spectrometry

Abstract

An apparatus for analyzing chemical species, comprising: (a) an ion source for producing ions from a sample substance; (b) a vacuum region, said vacuum region comprising at least two vacuum stages (183, 184, 185, 186), each of said vacuum stages (183, 184, 185, 186) having means for pumping away gas to produce a partial vacuum, said vacuum stages (183, 184, 185, 186) being in communication with each other such that said ions can move through a sequence of said vacuum stages (183, 184, 185, 186); (c) a Time-of-Flight mass analyzer (192) having a detector, said Time-of-Flight mass analyzer (192) being located in at least one (186) of said vacuum stages (183, 184, 185, 186); (d) at least one multipole ion guide (180, 181) located in said vacuum region; and (e) means for applying electrical voltages to said at least one multipole ion guide; characterized in that: said ion source operates substantially at atmospheric pressure.

  2. 7
An apparatus according to claims 1, 2 or 3, wherein said ion source produces ions from solution and delivers said ions into said vacuum region through an orifice.
  3. 14
An apparatus according to claims 10 or 11, wherein said AC and DC voltages are adjusted to increase the duty cycle of said Time-of-Flight mass analyzer (192).
  4. 26
A method of analyzing chemical species, comprising:(a) utilizing an ion source, a vacuum region with at least two vacuum stages (183, 184, 185, 186), at least one multipole ion guide (180, 181) which is located in said vacuum region, and a Time-of-Flight mass analyzer (192) having a time-of-flight tube and a detector, said Time-of-Flight mass analyzer (192) located in at least one of said vacuum stages (183, 184, 185, 186);(b) producing ions from a sample introduced into said ion source;(c) directing said ions into said at least one multipole ion guide (180, 181), said at least one multipole ion guide (180, 181) having electrical voltages applied thereto;(d) transferring said ions through said at least one multipole ion guide (180, 181);(e) transferring said ions from the exit of said at least one multipole ion guide (181) into said Time-of-Flight mass analyzer (192);and, (f) detecting said ions with said detector;characterized in that : said ion source operates substantially at atmospheric pressure.
