15 claims: 2 independent, 13 dependent

  1. 1
A downhole tool system comprising:a first downhole component having a groove;a second downhole component positioned relative to the first component forming a gap therebetween;and a seal element positioned in the groove and extending across the gap into sealing contact with the downhole components, characterised in that the seal element comprises a nanocomposite material including a polymer host material and carbon nanotubes.
  2. 11
A downhole tool system according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the carbon nanotubes structurally and chemically complement the polymer host material.
  3. 14
A seal assembly for providing a seal in a wellbore annulus, the seal assembly having a generally tubular mandrel and a seal element positioned exteriorly of the mandrel such that the seal element is operable to substantially prevent fluid flow in the wellbore annulus when the seal assembly is in a sealing configuration, the seal element comprising a nanocomposite material including a polymer host material and carbon nanotubes.
