Tire tread with anti-puncture pads

Abstract

A pneumatic tire has a tread (108) designed primarily for off-road activities, comprising large lugs. The tread (108) can be defined as having a central tread width that is divided into a central tread zone (A) and opposing lateral tread zones (B, C). The tire also has shoulder regions (S) extending from each lateral tread zone (B, C). The tread (108) itself has a plurality of tread elements (26, 28) separated by lateral grooves (30) in the lateral tread zones (B, C). The lateral grooves (30) in the lateral tread zones (B, C) are protected by elongated pads (52), the pads (52) extending from between a pair of the tread elements (26, 28) and into a shoulder region (S) of the tire. Each pad (52) has a radial height (Hp) less than the adjacent tread elements (26, 28) and has a base width (Wp) of at least 50% of the width (Wp) of the lateral grooves (30).

10 claims: 7 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
A pneumatic tire comprising a tread (108), the tread (108) having a central tread width (TWc) that is divided into a central tread zone (A) and opposing lateral tread zones (B, C), the tire further comprising shoulder regions (S) extending from each lateral tread zone (B, C), the tread (108) comprising a plurality of tread elements separated by lateral grooves (30) in the lateral tread zones (B, C), and elongated pads (52) in the lateral grooves (30), the pads (52) extending from between a pair of the tread elements and into a shoulder region (S), wherein the tire is further characterized by each pad (52) having a radial height (Hp) less than an adjacent tread element (26, 28) and a base width (Wp) of at least 50% of the width (Wg) of the lateral grooves (30).
  2. 4
The pneumatic tire of at least one of the previous claims, wherein the pads (52) have a tapering cross-sectional configuration along the smallest dimension.
  3. 6
The pneumatic tire of at least one of the previous claims, wherein the pads (52) have a maximum radial height (Hp) of 30% of the non-skid tread depth.
  4. 7
The pneumatic tire of at least one of the previous claims, wherein the pads (52) have a base width (Wp) of 50 - 90 % of the lateral groove width (Wg).
  5. 8
The pneumatic tire of at least one of the previous claims, wherein the pads (52) extend through the entire shoulder region (S) of the tire.
  6. 9
The pneumatic tire of at least one of the previous claims, wherein the pads (52) have a radially outer surface and the radially outer surface is parallel to the tread surface.
  7. 10
The pneumatic tire of at least one of the previous claims, wherein the pads (52) are located between every other tread element (26, 28) in the lateral tread zones (B, C).
