  1. 1
A picture coding method comprising:generating commands indicating correspondence between reference pictures and reference indices designating the reference pictures, wherein a reference index is assigned to a reference picture and a plurality of reference indices are assigned to each of at least one reference picture in said commands;determining a maximum value of the reference indices;determining a plurality of weighting coefficient sets for the reference indices by determining a weighting coefficient set for each reference index;selecting a reference index and a reference picture corresponding to the reference index for a current block to be coded, the reference picture corresponding to the reference index being referred to when motion compensation is performed on the current block to be coded;generating a predictive image of the current block by performing linear prediction on pixel values of a reference block applying the weighting coefficient set corresponding to the reference index selected in said selecting, the reference block being obtained from the reference picture when the motion compensation is performed on the current block to be coded;generating a prediction error that is a difference between the current block to be coded and the predictive image of the current block;and outputting a coded image signal obtained by coding: the reference index selected in said selecting;information indicating the maximum value of the reference indices;the commands;the plurality of weighting coefficient sets;and the prediction error, wherein the information indicating the maximum value of the reference indices is placed in a picture common information area included in the coded image signal.
  2. 2
A picture coding apparatus comprising:a command generation unit operable to generate commands indicating correspondence between reference pictures and reference indices designating the reference pictures, wherein a reference index is assigned to a reference picture and a plurality of reference indices are assigned to each of at least one reference picture in said commands;a maximum value determination unit operable to determine a maximum value of the reference indices;a plurality of weighting coefficient sets for the reference indices by determining a weighting coefficient set for each reference index;a selecting unit operable to select a reference index and a reference picture corresponding to the reference index for a current block to be coded, the reference picture corresponding to the reference index being referred to when motion compensation is performed on the current block to be coded;a predictive image generation unit operable to generate a predictive image of the current block by performing linear prediction on pixel values of a reference block, applying the weighting coefficient set corresponding to the reference index selected in said selecting unit, the reference block being obtained from the reference picture when the motion compensation is performed on the current block to be coded;a prediction error generating unit operable to generate a prediction error that is difference between the current block to be coded and the predictive image of the current block;and a coded image signal outputting unit operable to output a coded image signal obtained by coding: the reference index selected in said selecting unit;information indicating the maximum value of the reference indices;the commands;the plurality of weighting coefficient sets;and the prediction error, wherein the information indicating the maximum value of the reference indices is placed in a picture common information area included in the coded image signal.
