15 claims: 3 independent, 12 dependent

  1. 1
A power transmission device (22) comprising:a rotary input member (32) adapted to receive drive torque from a power source (16);a rotary output member (42) adapted to provide drive torque to an output device;a torque transfer mechanism operable for transferring drive torque from said input member (32) to said output member (42), said torque transfer mechanism including a friction clutch assembly (90;90') operably disposed between said input member and said output member and a clutch actuator (52) for applying a clutch engagement force to said friction clutch assembly (90;90');and a control system (58) that controls actuation of said clutch actuator (52) so as to maintain a desired torque split (TSP), wherein said control system calculates a total torque available for distribution, calculates a desired torque to distribute to said output member (TCDT) based on said total torque available for distribution (TCIP) and said desired torque split (TSP), and positions said clutch actuator (52) to transfer said desired torque (TCDT) through said friction clutch assembly (90;90'), characterized in that torque transmission characteristics of the friction clutch assembly (90;90') are correlated to a position of a pressure plate (112) of the clutch actuator (52) in a look-up table with a first column providing a predetermined number of value ranges for the desired torque (TCDT) to be generated by engagement of the friction clutch assembly (90;90') and with a second column providing for each of these ranges, a corresponding clutch actuator position (CAP), wherein each clutch actuator position (CAP) value is an integer that is indicative of an incremental change in the position of the pressure plate (112) of the clutch actuator (52);and the control system (58) is configured to determine a clutch actuator position (CAP) that corresponds to the calculated transfer case desired torque (TCDT) value using said look-up table, and to position the pressure plate (112) of the clutch actuator (52) in accordance with the determined clutch actuator position (CAP).
  2. 9
The power transmission device of any of claims 1 to 8 wherein said torque transfer mechanism is a transfer case (50) in communication with an engine and a transmission, wherein preferably said clutch is a multi-leaf friction clutch.
  3. 10
A method for controlling the distribution of torque between a rotary input member (32) adapted to receive drive torque from a power source (16) and a rotary output member (42) adapted to provide drive torque to an output device in a torque transfer mechanism operable for transferring drive torque from said input member (32) to said output member (42), said torque transfer mechanism including a friction clutch assembly (90; 90') operably disposed between said input member and said output member and a clutch actuator (52) for applying a clutch engagement force to said friction clutch assembly (90; 90'), the method comprising:controlling actuation of said clutch actuator (52) so as to maintain a desired torque split (TSP), wherein a total torque available for distribution (TCIP) is calculated, a desired torque to distribute to said output member (TCDT) is calculated based on said total torque available for distribution (TCIP) and said desired torque split (TSP), and said clutch actuator (52) is positioned to transfer said desired torque (TCDT) through said friction clutch assembly (90;90');characterized in that torque transmission characteristics of the friction clutch assembly (90;90') are correlated to a position of a pressure plate (112) of the clutch actuator (52) in a look-up table with a first column providing a predetermined number of value ranges for the desired torque (TCDT) to be generated by engagement of the friction clutch assembly (90;90') and with a second column providing for each of these ranges, a corresponding clutch actuator position (CAP), wherein clutch actuator position (CAP) value is an integer that is indicative of an incremental change in the position of pressure plate (112) of the clutch actuator (52);and in that positioning said clutch actuator (52) to transfer said desired torque (TCDT) through said friction clutch assembly (90;90') comprises: determining a clutch actuator position (CAP) that corresponds to the calculated transfer case desired torque (TCDT) value using said look-up table;and positioning the pressure plate (112) of the clutch actuator (52) in accordance with the determined clutch actuator position (CAP).
