Infusion method and device for making a coffee beverage

Abstract

To make a coffee beverage in a coffee percolator (1), hot water is fed, at relatively low pressure of about two atmospheres, into a sealed capsule (2) defined by a cup-shaped body (3) housing a measure of ground coffee and closed in fluidtight manner at an open end by a sealing wall (7) connected integrally to the cup-shaped body (3); the beverage being extracted from the sealed capsule (2) through hollow extraction needles (28), which have longitudinal inlet slits (31) of substantially 0.3 mm in width, and are inserted into the sealed capsule (2) through the sealing wall (7) before the hot water is fed into the sealed capsule (2), and so that the relative longitudinal slits (31) extend inside the sealed capsule (2) by respective lengths at least equal to a third of the depth of the relative cup-shaped body (3).

23 claims: 12 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
An infusion method for making a coffee beverage, the method comprising the steps of feeding hot water, at relatively low pressure of about two atmospheres, into a sealed capsule (2) defined by a cup-shaped body (3) of given depth, the cup-shaped body (3) housing a measure of ground coffee, being closed at one end by an end wall (6), and being closed in fluidtight manner, at an open end opposite said end wall (6), by a sealing wall (7) connected integrally to the cup-shaped body (3);and extracting said beverage from the sealed capsule (2) through hollow extraction needles (28) having longitudinal inlet slits (31), said extraction needles (28) being inserted into the sealed capsule (2) through said sealing wall (7) and prior to feeding hot water into the sealed capsule (2);and each said longitudinal slit (31), when extracting said beverage, extending inside the sealed capsule (2) by a length at least equal to a third of said depth.
  2. 4
A method as claimed in one of the foregoing Claims, wherein said longitudinal slits (31) are about 0.3 mm in width.
  3. 5
A method as claimed in one of the foregoing Claims, wherein said cup-shaped body (3) flares towards said sealing wall (7);the hot water expanding as it flows towards said extraction needles (28).
  4. 6
A method as claimed in one of the foregoing Claims, wherein hot water is fed into the sealed capsule (2) by inserting at least one hollow feed needle (24) into the sealed capsule (2).
  5. 9
A method as claimed in one of Claims 6 to 8, wherein said feed needle (24) is longer than said extraction needles (28).
  6. 10
An infusion device for making a coffee beverage, the infusion device (1) comprising a cup (40) of a given depth and for housing a sealed capsule (2) defined by a cup-shaped body (3) housing a measure of ground coffee and closed at one end by an end wall (6) and at another end by a sealing wall (7) connected integrally to the cup-shaped body (3), said sealed capsule (2) being positioned inside said cup (40) with the sealing wall (7) facing outwards;feed means (23, 24) for feeding hot water, at relatively low pressure of about two atmospheres, into a said sealed capsule (2) carried by said cup (40);and piercing means (26) facing said cup (40) to pierce the sealing wall (7) of a said sealed capsule (2) carried by said cup (40), and to extract said beverage from the sealed capsule (2);said piercing means (26) comprising a number of hollow extraction needles (28) having longitudinal inlet slits (31);and each said longitudinal slit (31) being of a length at least equal to a third of said depth.
  7. 13
An infusion device as claimed in one of Claims 10 to 12, wherein said longitudinal slits (31) are about 0.3 mm in width.
  8. 14
An infusion device as claimed in one of Claims 10 to 13, wherein said feed means (23, 24) comprise at least one hollow feed needle (24) facing said cup (40).
  9. 15
An infusion device as claimed in one of Claims 10 to 14, wherein said feed needle (24) is longer than said extraction needles (28).
  10. 17
An infusion device as claimed in one of Claims 10 to 16, wherein each said extraction needle (28) is in the shape of a cone;the relative said longitudinal slits (31) extending along respective generating lines of said cone.
  11. 18
An infusion device as claimed in one of Claims 10 to 16, wherein each said extraction needle (28) is in the shape of a pyramid having a number of faces;the relative said longitudinal slits (31) extending centrally along respective said faces of said pyramid.
  12. 19
An infusion device as claimed in one of Claims 10 to 18, and also comprising actuating means (34) for moving said cup (40) between a loading position, in which the cup (40) is detached from said piercing means (26) to permit insertion of a said sealed capsule (2) inside the cup (40), and an infusion position, in which said cup (40) is connected to said piercing means (26), and said feed needle (24) and said extraction needles (28) extend inside the cup (40).
