  1. 1
A method for positioning a variable geometry member in a variable geometry turbocharger (108) coupled to an internal combustible engine (102), the method comprising the steps of:determining (206) a boost pressure target for said turbocharger;calculating (210) an error value, err boost , between said boost pressure target and a measured actual boost pressure;determining (212) a first new variable geometry member position for said turbocharger based on said err boost ;determining a second new variable geometry member position for said turbocharger based on a measured speed of the engine;and positioning (218) the variable geometry member according to the first new variable geometry member position when the engine is in a power mode, or to the second new variable geometry position when the engine is in a braking mode.
  2. 5
A system for positioning a variable geometry member in a turbocharger (108) that is coupled to an internal combustible engine (102), said system comprising:a boost target map (310) for determining a boost pressure target for said turbocharger;an engine control unit (304) configured to calculate an error value, err boost , between the boost pressure target and an actual measured boost pressure, the engine control unit including a proportional integral differential module (314) configured to determine a first new variable geometry member position for said turbocharger based on said err boost ;an open loop control module (316) to determine a second new variable geometry member position for the turbocharger based on a measured speed of the engine;and an actuator (306) configured to position said variable geometry member according to said first new variable geometry member position when the engine is in a power mode, or according to the second new variable geometry member position when the engine is in a braking mode.
