11 claims: 6 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A band-pass filter (100), comprising:a stacked pair of film bulk acoustic resonators (FBARs) (110, 120), each of the FBARs comprising opposed planar electrodes (e.g., 112, 114) and a layer (116) of piezoelectric material between the electrodes;and an acoustic decoupler (130) between the FBARs which is adapted to couple less acoustic energy between the FBARs than would be coupled by direct contact between the FBARs, in which the acoustic decoupler comprises a layer (131) of acoustic decoupling material, wherein the acoustic decoupling material comprises plastic having an acoustic impedance intermediate between 4 Mrayl and 8 Mrayl.
  2. 4
The band-pass filter of one of the preceding claims, in which the plastic material comprises polyimide or poly(para-xylylene).
  3. 5
The band-pass filter of any one of the preceding claims, additionally comprising an electrical connection (134, 137) between adjacent ones of the electrodes of the FBARs.
  4. 6
The band-pass filter of any one of the preceding claims, additionally comprising a ladder filter (210) electrically connected in series with the stacked pair of FBARs.
  5. 8
An electrical filtering method, comprising:providing a band-pass filter in accordance with any one of the preceding claims;applying an input electrical signal to one of the FBARs;and taking a filtered output electrical signal from across the other of the FBARs.
  6. 9
A method of fabricating an acoustically-coupled device, the method comprising:fabricating a first film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) (110);fabricating an acoustic decoupler on the first FBAR (130);fabricating a second FBAR (120) on the acoustic decoupler, including subjecting the acoustic decoupler to a maximum temperature;and prior to fabricating the second FBAR, baking the first FBAR and the acoustic decoupler at a temperature not lower than the maximum temperature;wherein the acoustic decoupler is adapted to couple less acoustic energy between the FBARs than would be coupled by direct contact between the FBARs and comprises a layer (131) of plastic material having an acoustic impedance intermediate between 4 Mrayl and 8 Mrayl.
