Optical air data measurement system and method

Abstract

Systems and methods for sensing air outside a moving aircraft are presented. In one embodiment, a system includes a laser for generating laser energy. The system also includes one or more transceivers for projecting the laser energy as laser radiation to the air. Subsequently, each transceiver receives laser energy as it is backscattered from the air. A computer processes signals from the transceivers to distinguish molecular scattered laser radiation from aerosol scattered laser radiation and determines one or more air parameters based on the scattered laser radiation. Such air parameters may include air speed, air pressure, air temperature and aircraft orientation angle, such as yaw, angle of attack and sideslip.

  1. 1
A method for remotely sensing air (104) outside a moving aircraft (102), comprising:projecting the laser radiation (103) from the aircraft (102) into the air (104) to induce scattered radiation (107) that has a molecular scattered radiation component (107A) and an aerosol scattered radiation component (107B), the step of projecting comprising tuning the laser radiation (103) to a plurality of spectral steps and projecting the laser radiation (103) into the air at each of the steps;detecting scattered laser radiation (107) at each spectral step;distinguishing the molecular scattered laser radiation component (107A) from the aerosol scattered radiation component (107B) based on the detected scattered laser radiation at each spectral step;and determining one or more air parameters based on said molecular and aerosol scattered radiation components (107A, 107B), the air parameters selected from the group of air speed of the aircraft (102), pressure outside the aircraft (102), temperature outside the aircraft (102) and aircraft orientation angle.
  2. 17
A system for sensing of air (104) outside a moving aircraft (102), comprising:an atomic vapor filter (317);at least one laser (109, 141) configured for generating laser energy (103) at a plurality of spectral steps;at least one transceiver (110) for projecting the laser energy (103) from the aircraft (102) to the air (104) at each of the spectral steps, and for receiving scattered laser energy (107) from the air (104);and a computer (113) for processing signals (155) from the transceiver (110) at said plurality of spectral steps to distinguish molecular scattered radiation (107A) from aerosol scattered radiation (107B) and for determining one or more air (104) parameters based on the scattered laser radiation (107).
