  1. 1
A flexible absorbent binder composition comprising a water-soluble ionic polymer capable of sufficient post-application non-radiative moisture-induced crosslinking within 10 minutes at a temperature of 120°C or less, to reach an absorbent capacity of at least one gram of fluid per gram of absorbent binder composition measured using the centrifuge retention capacity test as defined herein, the binder composition comprising:from 15 mass percent to 99.8 mass percent of monoethylenically unsaturated polymer units which are formed by monomers selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acid group-containing monomers, carboxylic acid salt-containing monomers, sulphonic acid group-containing monomers, sulphonic acid salt-containing monomers, phosphonic acid group-containing monomers, phosphonic acid salt-containing monomers and quaternary ammonium salt-containing monomers, and which are copolymerized with 0.1 to 20 percent by mass of acrylate or methacrylate ester units which contain an alkoxysilane functionality to form the ionic polymer;and 0.1 to 75% by mass of polyolefin glycol and/or polyolefin oxide units which are attached to and/or blended with the copolymer of the monoethylenically unsaturated polymer units and the acrylate or methacrylate ester units which contain the alkoxysilane functionality;and wherein the water-soluble ionic polymer comprises at least 15 mole percent ionic polymer units.
  2. 11
The absorbent binder composition of any of Claims 1 to 10, wherein the alkoxysilane group is a trialkoxysilane group having the following structure:wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are alkyl groups independently having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
  3. 13
The absorbent binder composition of any of Claims 1-12, wherein the monoethylenically unsaturated polymer units comprise between 25% and 89.5% by weight of the absorbent binder composition.
  4. 15
The absorbent binder composition of any of Claims 1-14, wherein the acrylate and/or methacrylate ester units comprise between 1.0% and 10% by mass of the absorbent binder composition.
  5. 17
An absorbent article, comprising the absorbent binder composition of any of Claims 1-16.
  6. 18
A combination of an absorbent binder coating and a substrate, the coating comprising the absorbent binder composition of any of Claims 1-16.
  7. 24
An absorbent structure having a central region and two end regions, comprising:a first substrate layer;and a flexible absorbent binder bound to the substrate layer at one or more predetermined selected locations;the flexible absorbent binder being obtainable by crosslinking the absorbent binder composition of any of Claims 1-16 on the substrate layer at the selected locations.
  8. 27
An absorbent article, comprising:a liquid-permeable fluid receiving layer;an absorbent core;and a liquid-impermeable outer cover;wherein at least one of the fluid receiving layer, absorbent core and outer cover comprises the absorbent structure of any of Claims 24-26.
  9. 31
The absorbent article of any of Claims 27-30, further comprising superabsorbent particles combined with the flexible absorbent binder.
  10. 32
The absorbent article of any of Claims 27-31, further comprising a menses modifying agent combined with the flexible absorbent binder.
  11. 33
An absorbent article, comprising the following three layers in sequence and adjacent to each other:a) a fluid intake layer;b) a flexible absorbent binder layer;and c) a support layer;wherein the flexible absorbent binder layer is formed between the fluid intake layer and the support layer and is bound to the fluid intake layer and the support layer;the flexible absorbent binder being formed by crosslinking the absorbent binder composition of any of Claims 1-16.
  12. 37
The absorbent article of any of Claims 33-36, wherein the support layer comprises one of an outer cover and a spacer.
  13. 39
The absorbent article of any of Claims 27-38, wherein the absorbent article is one of a diaper, a training pant, a diaper pant, a feminine hygiene article, an adult incontinence garment, a swimwear garment, and a medical absorbent article.
  14. 44
The method of any of Claims 40-43, further comprising the steps of adding a reducing polymerization initiator to one of the first and second liquid media, and adding an oxidizing polymerization initiator to the other of the first and second liquid media.
  15. 45
The method of any of Claims 40-44, further comprising the step of crosslinking the absorbent binder composition in the absence of radiation, at a temperature of about 120°C or less.
  16. 46
A method of making an absorbent article of any of Claims 33-39, comprising the steps of:providing a fluid intake layer;providing a support layer;applying an absorbent binder composition to at least one of the fluid intake layer and the support layer;bringing the layers together so that the absorbent binder composition contacts both the fluid intake layer and the support layer;and crosslinking the absorbent binder composition to provide the flexible absorbent binder layer bound to both the fluid intake layer and the support layer.
