10 claims: 6 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A method for transmitting data on a reverse link of a wireless communication system (100), the method comprising:transmitting (532) a frame of data on the reverse link via a data channel;temporarily retaining the data frame in a buffer;monitoring for a message (538) on a forward link indicating a received status of the transmitted data frame;monitoring for a second transmission (540) of the message;and processing (542) the data frame based on one or more received messages (538,540) for the data frame, characterised by : combining the received messages (538,540) for the data frame to provide a more reliable message.
  2. 5
The method of any preceding claim, comprising identifying the transmitted data frame with a sequence number.
  3. 7
The method of any preceding claim, comprising identifying the transmitted data frame as either a first transmission or a retransmission.
  4. 8
The method of any preceding claim, wherein said one or more messages comprises an acknowledgement or a negative acknowledgment corresponding to the data frame.
  5. 9
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the second transmission of the message is at the same or a lower power level relative to that of the first transmission.
  6. 10
An apparatus (106) for transmitting data on a reverse link of a wireless communication system (100), the apparatus (106) comprising:means (216) for transmitting a frame of data on the reverse link via a data channel;means for temporarily retaining the data frame in a buffer;means for monitoring for a message (538) on a forward link indicating a received status of the transmitted data frame;means for monitoring for a second transmission (540) of the message;and means for processing the data frame based on the one or more received messages (538,540) for the data frame, characterised by : means for combining the received messages (538,540) for the data frame to provide a more reliable message.
