EP1524812A2

Multicarrier transmission system with low power sleep mode and rapid-on-capability

Abstract

A multicarrier transceiver is provided with a sleep mode in which it idles with reduced power consumption when it is not needed to transmit or receive data. The full transmission and reception capabilities of the transceiver are quickly restored when needed, without requiring the full (and time-consuming) initialization commonly needed to restore such transceivers to operation after inactivity.

9 claims: 4 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A multicarrier transceiver (10) having a low power sleep mode capability comprising:means for storing selected state parameters representing characteristics of a communications channel over which the transceiver (10) is operating;means for reducing power to portions of the transceiver (10) to enter the low power sleep mode;means for restoring power to the portions;means for restoring the transceiver (10) from the sleep mode based on the selected state parameters;and means for restoring communications without reinitialization of the transceiver (10).
  2. 4
The transceiver according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising means for maintaining synchronization between the transceiver (10) and a remote transceiver.
  3. 5
A multicarrier transceiver (10) having a sleep mode capability, preferably according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising:A. means responsive to a sleep mode command for: (1) storing selected state parameters characteristic of the communication channel over which the transceiver (10) is operating;and (2) reducing power to selected portions of transceiver circuitry, and B. means responsive to a wake-up command for: (1) restoring the state of said transceiver (10) from said sleep mode;and (2) restoring power to said transceiver (10);to thereby facilitate restoration of communications without reinitialization of said transceiver (10).
  4. 6
A low power sleep method for use in a multicarrier communications environment comprising:storing selected state parameters representing characteristics of a communications channel over which a transceiver (10) is operating;reducing power to portions of the transceiver (10) to enter a low power sleep mode;restoring power to the portions;restoring the transceiver (10) from the sleep mode based on the selected state parameters;and restoring communications without reinitialization of the transceiver (10).
