  1. 1
Apparatus for creating a low-bandwidth channel in a high bandwidth channel 100 in a packet-switched digital network comprising:a deserializer (210;610) operable to convert a serial high bandwidth channel (100) from a serial datastream to an output high bandwidth parallel datastream (212), memory (260) operable to hold an extra packet (110, 112) for the low-bandwidth channel, memory (250;650) operable to hold the high bandwidth parallel datastream while the packet for the low-bandwidth channel is being sent, a serializer (220;620) operable to convert a parallel datastream to a serial datastream, and control logic (230;630) operable to accept the high bandwidth parallel datastream, to route the high bandwidth parallel datastream to the serializer when the extra packet (110, 112) is not being transmitted and to route the output of the memory holding the extra packet (110, 112) to the serializer while transmitting the extra packet (110, 112) forming the low bandwidth channel, characterised in that the control logic is arranged to require a predetermined interval between transmission of the extra packet (110, 112)s and is arranged to minimize inter-packet gaps between packets in the high bandwidth channel (100) following transmission of the extra packet (110, 112).
  2. 7
Apparatus as in any preceding claim, where the serializer (220;620) has an optical output or an electrical output.
  3. 8
A method of creating a low-bandwidth channel in a high-bandwidth channel in a packet-switched digital network comprising the steps of:converting the high-bandwidth serial channel to a high bandwidth parallel datastream, holding an extra packet (110, 112) for the low-bandwidth channel in a memory (220;620), capturing the high bandwidth parallel datastream in a memory (250;650) while the packet for the low bandwidth channel is being sent;and selecting under control of a state machine (230;630) either the high bandwidth parallel datastream or the extra packet (110, 112) in the low bandwidth channel memory for conversion from parallel to serial form, the method characterised by comprising requiring a predetermined interval between transmission of the extra packets (110, 112) and minimizing inter-packet gaps between packets in the high bandwidth channel (100) following transmission of the extra packet (110, 112).
