9 claims: 1 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A controller for controlling a regulated output of an output regulator, the output regulator being responsive to a pulse width signal for controlling the transfer of energy between an input source and the regulated output, said controller (950) comprising:a duty cycle estimator (952) that is operable to determine a nominal duty cycle;and an adjust determiner (954) that is operable to determine an adjustment value (ADJ) to combine with the nominal duty cycle to generate an adjusted duty cycle, wherein the pulse width signal is a function of the adjusted duty cycle, characterized in that the adjust determiner (954) includes a selectable loop gain (Δ 1 , Δ 2 ), wherein the adjustment value is based on the selectable loop gain.
  2. 2
The controller of Claim 1 wherein the selectable loop gain is selectable at a rate greater than a switching frequency of the output regulator.
  3. 3
The controller of Claim 1 further comprising a counter (958), responsive to the adjusted duty cycle, that is operable to generate an initial pulse width.
  4. 4
The controller of Claim 3 further comprising a control block (962) that is operable to generate a delay control as a function of the nominal duty cycle and the initial pulse width;and a delay line (960), responsive to the initial pulse width and the delay control, that is operable to generate the pulse width signal having a finetuned pulse width.
  5. 5
The controller of Claim 1 further comprising a duty cycle limiter (964) for limiting the adjusted duty cycle as a function of a regulator characteristic.
  6. 6
The controller of Claim 1 wherein the adjust determiner (954) includes loop compensation that stabilizes a loop response of the output regulator, wherein the loop compensation is controllable at a rate ranging from approximately equal to the switching frequency of the output regulator up to a sampling frequency of the controller.
  7. 7
The controller of Claim 1 wherein the adjustment value is a function of an estimated trend of error, that is based on a difference between a reference and the regulated output.
  8. 8
The controller of Claim 1 wherein the adjustment value is a function of a slope constant selectable at a rate greater than a switching frequency of the output regulator.
  9. 9
The controller of Claim 1 wherein the adjustment value is a function of an error history that is based on a difference between a reference and the regulated output, and wherein the error history is based on a mathematical function of prior values of the error including a running average, a mean, a peak value, and a weighted average.
