11 claims: 7 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A surgical navigation system having a substantially minimally invasive dynamic reference frame for dynamically referencing portions of an anatomy, comprising:a body portion (70) selectively attachable to a portion of the anatomy;a holding section (76) to hold said body portion relative to the portion of the anatomy;wherein said holding section is operable to substantially non-invasively hold said body portion relative to the portion of the anatomy;characterized by : a sensor bobbin (90) to sense and/or transmit a characteristic;a bore (78) formed in the body portion to removably receive the sensor bobbin, wherein the bore is a blind bore formed in the body portion and the sensor bobbin is removable from the blind bore.
  2. 2
The surgical navigation system of Claim 1, wherein said body portion includes an adhesive receiving section on an inferior side (74) formed by a recess (76) in said body portion;wherein said adhesive receiving section allows for the placement of adhesive between said body portion to be affixed to the portion of the anatomy and said portion of the anatomy.
  3. 3
The surgical navigation system of Claim 1 or 2, wherein said characteristic includes at least one of an optical characteristic, a electro-magnetic characteristic, an acoustic characteristic, a light characteristic, and combinations thereof.
  4. 4
The surgical navigation system according to any one of claims 1-3, wherein said sensor bobbin (90) includes at least one coil (96) to transmit and/or receive an electro-magnetic field.
  5. 5
The surgical navigation system of Claim 4, further comprising the sensor bobbin (90) having a bobbin body (92) formed of a non-conductive material having at least two depressions formed in the body;and at least two coils (96, 98) positioned at an angle relative to one another wrapped around the bobbin body in the two depressions;wherein a plurality of degrees of freedom of movement of the navigation portion can be determined;wherein the bore is a blind bore formed in the body portion and the navigation bobbin is removable from the blind bore.
  6. 6
The surgical navigation system according to any one of claims 1 - 5, wherein said holding section includes an adhesive section and a tensioning member (84) extending from said body portion to engage at least one of the portion of the anatomy or an area adjacent to a portion of the anatomy.
  7. 7
The surgical navigation system according to Claim 6, wherein said holding section with said tensioning member (84) is operable to substantially eliminate dermal shift when said body portion is selectively attached to the portion of the anatomy;wherein said tensioning member (84) is adapted to form dermal puckering (82) relative to said body portion.
  8. 8
The surgical navigation system according to any one of Claims 1-7, wherein said holding section includes a substantially moldable material (110) that is sized to be fit intercochlear when molded to a selected shape;wherein said holding section is operable to substantially accurately repeatably engage the portion of the anatomy.
  9. 9
The surgical navigation system according to any one of Claims 1-8, further comprising a fiducial marker divot (80) formed into said body portion.
  10. 10
The surgical navigation system according to any one of Claims 1-9, wherein said holding section is moldably contoured (110) to the selected portion of the anatomy to maintain the molded contour to allow for substantially repeatable placement of the holding section.
  11. 11
The surgical navigation system of Claims 1-10, wherein the sensor bobbin further includes a handle (94).
