  1. 1
A system for use in navigating an implantation of a selected construct, comprising:a first member (206) and a second member (88;220) of the construct adapted to selectively interact with each other after implantation;a processor (24) operable to assist in navigation of said second member relative to said first member;and a display (28): characterized by : a first localization element (104;106;108) selectively attached to said first member such that a position of the first localization element allows for a determination of the position of said first member with six degrees of freedom, the first localization element acting as a dynamic reference frame when attached to the first member: a second localization element (104: 106;108) selectively attached to said second member such that a position of the second localization element allows for a determination of the position of said second member with six degrees of freedom, the second localization element acting as a dynamic reference frame when attached to the second member;a detector (22) to detect said first localization element and said second localization element when said localization elements are attached to at least one of said first member and said second member;said processor (24) being operable to receive position information for at least one of said first member and said second member from said detector and further operable to determine a relative position of the other of said at least one of said first member and said second member;said relative position is operable to allow a navigation of at least one of said first member and said second member;and said processor (24) is operable to display icons representing the first and second members on said display and thereby allow navigation of at least one of said first member and said second member without requiring images of the patient.
  2. 20
The system of Claim 1, wherein the display is operable to display an icon illustrating an entry point to interconnect the first member and the second member.
  3. 24
The system of one of claims 21-23, wherein said detector(s) (22) is/are selected from the group comprising and the electromagnetic detector, an optical detector, a conductive detector, a fiber optic detector, an acoustic detector, and combinations thereof.
  4. 25
The system of one of claims 21-24, wherein said navigable instrument is operable to engage the third member to move the third member relative to the first member.
  5. 26
The system of one of claims 21-25, wherein said processor is operable to navigate said navigable instrument relative to said tracking elements such that said third member is moved to a selected position relative to said first member substantially at least one of percutaneously and minimally invasively.
  6. 27
The system of one of claims 21-26, further comprising:an imaging device to acquire a patient image of a selected portion relative to at least one of the first member and the third member to confirm the displayed position of at least one of the first member and the third member.
  7. 28
The system of one of claims 21-27, wherein said processor provides an alignment along at least two planes relative to the first member and the third member.
  8. 30
The system of one of claims 21-29, wherein said processor determines the position of the first member and the third member in a substantially patient imageless manner.
  9. 35
The system of one of claims 21-34, further comprising a fourth member wherein said processor is operable to determine a point for each of the first member, the second member and the fourth member and navigates said third member relative to each of the first member, second member, and fourth member.
  10. 36
A method of positioning a construct in any visually restrictive, non-anatomical, location, said construct having at least a first member, a second member, and a third member, comprising:selecting a final orientation of at least one of the first member, the second member, and the third member relative to at least one other of the first member, the second member, and the third member;interconnecting a first trackable element and a second trackable element with each of the first member and the second member, respectively;determining the position of the first member and the second member with six degrees of freedom at least via the first trackable element and the second trackable element;displaying said position of each of said first member and the second member;and navigably positioning at least one of said first member, said second member, and said third member relative to another of at least one of said first member, said second member, and said third member to achieve the selected final orientation.
  11. 37
The method of Claim 36, further comprising:positioning the first member and the second member via the first trackable element and the second trackable element, respectively.
