  1. 1
A method for a priority mechanism for distributed sending of media data, the method comprising:transmitting a plurality of send requests (604(1)...604(v)) from a plurality of schedulers, each scheduler being associated with a different one of a plurality of media data sending devices (302), to a sender (304) of a second device, wherein the second device is not part of the plurality of media data sending devices, and wherein each send request in the plurality of send requests stipulates a media data block and designates a client (206) to which at least a portion of the media data block is to be sent, wherein each of the plurality of media data sending devices (302) comprises a scheduler and sender and the client (206) is not one of said plurality of media data sending devices (302);ranking, at the sender (304) of the second device, the plurality of send requests (604(1)...604(v)) based on an associated unique priority of each send request in the plurality of send requests (604(1)...604(v)), the unique priority of each send request being calculated from a unique scheduler ID for the one of the schedulers transmitting the corresponding send request and a request ID assigned by the said scheduler , which request ID is unique among the send requests from the said scheduler, wherein the associated unique priority is further based on whether two or more of the plurality of media data sending devices store a sub-block of the media data block, and, when two or more devices of the plurality of media data sending devices store said sub-block, the associated unique priority is set to a lower priority than the associated unique priority when there is only a single device that stores the sub-block;ascertaining, at the sender (304) of the second device, a threshold priority (704) based on the ranking (706) and responsive to a send bandwidth (606) available for sending media data from the sender (304) of the second device, said ascertaining comprising determining an accumulated bandwidth for send requests (604(1)...604(v)) received by the sender (304) of the second device in order of the ranking, the threshold priority being the associated unique priority of a lowest ranking one of said received send requests (604(3)) for which the accumulated bandwidth does not exceed the send bandwidth (606);transmitting the threshold priority (704) from the sender (304) of the second device to the plurality of schedulers of the plurality of media data sending devices (302);at each scheduler of the plurality of schedulers of the plurality of media data sending devices (302): comparing, the associated unique priority of a corresponding send request and the threshold priority;and if it is determined, based on the comparing, that the associated unique priority of the send request is less than the threshold priority, then: determining, that the send request will not be honored by the sender of the second device;checking, at the scheduler of the first device, whether a sender of a third device of the plurality of media data sending devices has a threshold priority that is less than the associated unique priority of the send request (604(v)), wherein the third device stores the sub-block;and if the threshold priority of the sender of the third device is lower than the associated unique priority of the send request (604(v)), sending the send request (604(v)) to the sender of the third device.
  2. 9
A system adapted to perform the method of any of claims 1 to 8, the system comprising:said plurality of media sending devices (302);wherein: a scheduler of the plurality of schedulers is associated with the client (206) and responsible for servicing a media data stream being sent to the client (206);and the sender (304) of the second device is associated with media data including the media data block, the sender (304) being operable to send at least a portion of the media data block to the client (206) in response to the send request (604(v)).
  3. 10
One or more processor-accessible media comprising processor-executable instructions that, when executed, direct a system to perform method of any one of the claims 1 to 8.
