8 claims: 4 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A handheld biopsy instrument (10) comprising:a. a hollow, biopsy, insertion needle (15) having an axially extending open specimen port (17) at its distal end, b. an elongated, rotatable, tissue specimen cutter (20) slidably received within said biopsy insertion needle, c. a specimen tube (25) coaxially positioned with cutter (20) d. means for applying a first vacuum within the distal end of said needle whereby a portion of the tissue to be sampled is drawn into said specimen port when said needle is inserted into the tissue to be sampled, e. means for advancing said cutter toward the distal end of said needle, characterised in that the device additionally comprises: means for rotating said cutter as said cutter advances within said needle, whereby said cutter cuts and encapsulates the portion of said tissue contained within said specimen port, an elongated flexible push rod (18) slidably received within said needle and parallel to said cutter, said push rod extending to the distal end of said needle, means for advancing said flexible push rod axially toward the distal end of said needle, means at the distal end of said needle for causing said push rod to turn 180 degrees thereby reversing its direction of movement whereby said push rod end enters said cutter, engages said encapsulated tissue specimen therein, thereby moving said tissue specimen axially toward the proximal end of said cutter, means for applying a second vacuum to the proximal end of the specimen tube to prevent the portion of said tissue from moving under the influence of the first vacuum when the flexible push rod is retracted.
  2. 5
The biopsy instrument of any one of claims 2-4, additionally comprising a vacuum port (28) receiving therein a vacuum source tube (29), said vacuum port (28) being provided at the proximal end of the biopsy insertion needle (15) for providing a vacuum within lower lumen (19).
  3. 6
The biopsy instrument of any one of claims 2-5, wherein the specimen tube (25) is removable from the biopsy instrument.
  4. 7
The biopsy instrument of any one of claims 2-6, wherein the specimen tube (25) has an engagement feature (25A) which enables the specimen tube (25) and the cutter (20) to advance and retract in unison.
